Barbarians see off spirited Brazil

David Skippers

The Barbarians returned to the victory trail courtesy of a 47-22 victory over Brazil in an entertaining clash in Sao Paulo on Wednesday.

The famous touring team were full value for their win as they dominated for long periods but the home side delivered a spirited performance and the Baa-baas held a slender 19-15 lead at half-time.

Brazil’s Daniel Lima crossed for the opening try before the Barbarians struck back via a five-pointer from Campese Ma’afu midway through the first half.

Josh Reeves replied with a penalty for the home side but further tries from Felipe Ezcurra and David Havili gave the Baa-baas the edge, before Luiz Vieira scored Brazil’s second try just before the interval.

The Barbarians dominated proceedings after the break and further tries from Angus Cottrell (2) and Jano Vermaak gave them a comfortable lead, but Brazil did not surrender and were rewarded when Felipe Cunha scored a consolation try in the 72nd minute.

The Baa-baas finished stronger though and five minutes later Havili crossed for his second try which was converted by Rory Best in what was his final match before retirement.
