Australia player ratings: Marika Koroibete and Fraser McReight shine in win over South Africa
Following their 25-17 victory over South Africa in their Rugby Championship Test at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday, here’s the player ratings for Australia.
15 Reece Hodge: Returned to the starting line-up and gave a good account of himself. Made some telling runs from the back and was safe under the high ball. 7
14 Tom Wright: Shifted to the wing after some time at full-back but, despite some good attacking runs, he was yellow carded for a defensive indiscretion in the first half. 6
13 Len Ikitau: Had little opportunities with ball in hand but was steady on attack and defence. 6
12 Hunter Paisami: Was his usual solid self. Rattled the Boks with some big hits in midfield and had some strong runs. 6
11 Marika Koroibete: A brilliant all-round performance from the Wallaby flyer. Caught the eye with a spectacular try-saving tackle on Makazole Mapimpi and a well taken try. 9
10 Noah Lolesio: Came into the run-on side and there was plenty of pressure on him but he handled it well with a composed all-round performance. 8
9 Nic White: Was his usual feisty self and combined well with Lolesio. Impressed with his option-taking and put his body on the line on defence. 8
8 Rob Valetini: Another strong performance from the powerhouse back-row. Impressed with a strong carry in the build-up to his team’s first try but soured his display with a late yellow card. 7
Superb in the absence of Michael Hooper
7 Fraser McReight: Had big boots to fill as regular captain Michael Hooper’s replacement but has done well since coming into the run-on side. Was excellent on defence and attack and rewarded with a brace of tries. 9
6 Jed Holloway: Stood up well to the physical onslaught from the Boks but didn’t really make an impact on defence and attack. 6
5 Matt Philip: Made a nuisance of himself against the Boks’ much vaunted lineout and also caught the eye as a ball carrier and on defence. A good shift. 8
4 Rory Arnold: Unlike Philip, Arnold had a quiet game. Did what was expected of him in the lineouts but little else to report. Replaced after 51 minutes by Darcy Swain. 5
3 Allan Alaalatoa: He was put under pressure in the scrums but handled it well and was busy in the loose. 6
2 Folau Fainga’a: Came to the fore with a strong all-round performance during an 80-minute shift. Had one crooked throw-in at a lineout but solid in all other departments. 8
1 James Slipper (c): The Wallabies skipper led his troops impressively and stood up well in the scrums. Also played a big part in the build-up to McReight’s second try with a great pass to Lolesio. 7
Replacements: Most of the changes were made with the match already secured in the game’s closing stages and Pete Samu was the standout performer on attack and defence. 7
