The Saracens wide man had been under pressure after a worrying slump in international form, and indeed he was in line to be dropped for the Pumas clash.

But injuries to rivals Marland Yarde and Christian Wade saw the 26-year-old retain his place in the number 14 jersey.

Having been held up by Juan Imhoff early in the game, Ashton was able to slide over for his side's third try.

“I was never going to miss that,” said Ashton in the aftermath of England's second November Test victory.

“Christian trained with the team on Tuesday but he pulled up with a hamstring injury. He could have been playing today (Saturday).”

“I thought I might not have been involved but I just had to get on with it but fortunately I got a chance to play.”

Despite an impressive overall strike rate of 18 tries in 36 Tests for his country, he has just three tries in his last 19 games.

But England coach Stuart Lancaster praised the speedster's resilience.

“Christian tightened his hamstring and Chris then came back into the equation,” he said.

'During Tuesday's training his attitude was excellent, on Thursday his attitude was excellent and I'm pleased for him to get his try today (Saturday).

“He enjoys scoring and it was nice for him to get that one.”
