England have been dealt a blow after back-row Brad Shields was flown home after suffering a foot injury on their training camp in Italy.

The 28-year-old returns to England at a crucial time in their preparations ahead of the World Cup and now faces a nervous wait on the diagnosis.

Taking his place in the training squad will be Harlequins flanker Alex Dombrandt, who enjoyed an excellent season for his club outfit in 2018/19.

“Quins forward Alex Dombrandt will fly out to Italy to join the England squad later. He will replace Brad Shields (Wasps) who returns home after picking up a foot ligament injury,” read a statement from England.

“Shields will undergo assessment in England to understand the extent of the injury.”

England kick off their Rugby World Cup warm-up matches against Wales at Twickenham on August 11.
