Tasman kicked off their ITM Cup season with an excellent win as they thrashed Hawke's Bay 35-15 in a rematch of last year's championship final in Blenheim.

The Makos outscored the Magpies four tries to two, with Tasman fly-half Marty Banks contributing 15 points from the kicking tee.

Banks was the star of the show as he also helped create two of his side's tries. His much-vaunted opposite number, Ihaia West, will rue a number of missed shots at goal

Tasman ran freely all game. Liam Squire broke clear before ofloading to Joe Wheeler for the first try.

Makos full-back James Lowe and Banks combined to set up wing Bryce Heem to score in the corner as Tasman raced to a 23-3 halftime lead.

Tom Marshall also touched down after the break and the bonus-point try was a gem as New Zealand U20 David Havili finished in style.

Hawke's Bay centre Robbie Fruean, still hunting a Super Rugby contract, scored an intercept try in a promising performance despite his lack of fitness while Magpies captain Brendon O'Connor tried his heart out and was rewarded with a try too.
