Try-scorer: Luke McLean

Treviso romped to a thumping 45-27 PRO12 bonus point victory over a lacklustre Dragons outfit at Stadio Monigo on Saturday.

Ludovico Nitoglia's try and the accurate boot of Matt Berquist gave Treviso a deserved 19-6 advantage at the break. Newport responded before the interval through two Jason Tovey penalties, but it was the Italian outfit that continued to dominate after the break.

Luke McLean, Michele Campagnaro, Manoa Vosawai and Matteo Muccignat all touched down as Treviso sealed a comfortable win, despite Matthew Screech, Ross Wardle and Cory Hill scores salvaging an element of pride for the Dragons.

Although the visitors went into the game in 10th position, they had a chance of securing European rugby next season with them just four behinds behind seventh place Edinburgh. And they opened the game brightly.

Although Tom Prydie was awry with a long-range penalty attempt, Tovey made up for that miss by kicking the Dragons 3-0 ahead after 10 minutes. Berquist levelled matters soon after but the Dragons fly-half restored their advantage midway through the first half.

However, Treviso responded straight from the restart as Nitoglia crossed the whitewash to give the hosts a 10-6 lead. It proved to be a setback the Welsh region struggled to come back from in the opening period as Benetton assumed control of proceedings.

Indiscipline proved to be an issue as three successive Berquist three-pointers extended the home side's advantage to 19-6 at half-time. The Italian side took that momentum into the second period and two tries in the early exchanges took the game out of the Dragons' reach.

Firstly, McLean went over before Campagnaro touched down to make the score 31-6 in the hosts favour. Screech gave Lyn Jones' men a glimmer of hope when he crossed the whitewash with a quarter of the match to go, but Vosawai's try extinguished any chances of them winning the game.

To their credit, the Dragons didn't give up and hit back through Wardle, but their disappointing defence let Treviso in once again when Muccignat touched down. The Dragons had the last word through Hill but it couldn't dampen an outstanding result for the hosts.
