Two tries: Metuisela Talebula

Bordeaux-Bègles caused an upset in the Top 14 on Saturday, winning 26-16 against league leaders Clermont at Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas.

In a result that lifts the hosts back into the play-off hunt, winger Metuisela Talebula's two tries proved criticial as les Jaunards were ultimately undone.

There was a real lack of attacking quality on show in the early sparring as both teams found their feet, with Brock James and Pierre Bernard trading a penalty apiece in the opening 20 minutes.

Both the fly-halves however did miss respective shots at goal they would usually like to make.

Bernard would be unsuccessful for the second time on 25 minutes when he struck the post but did make amends seven minutes before the break as Bordeaux-Bègles took the lead for the first time in the match. The hosts knew victory would take them level with sixth-place Grenoble.

The closing stages of the half would then spring to life as after James had levelled matters, a lovely break-out try from Elvis Vermeulen would put Clermont into a strong position. It came from Lee Byrne's line-break in his own 22 before Davit Zirakashvili carried.

James' extras pushed the visitors 6-13 ahead but coach Vern Cotter would have been disappointed that a high tackle led to Bernard adding three immediately after the restart.

Bordeaux-Bègles came out strongly after the half-time break and crossed through dangerman Talebula and with Bernard's kick they were 16-14 up on their visitors.

James levelled matters on 56 minutes off the tee but Bernard was once again on hand to reply with seventeen minutes remaining in the contest, meaning a nervy finish awaited.

Talebula would have the final say though, capitalising on loose ball to go in under the posts for a try that denied Clermont a losing bonus-point, with Bernard adding the simple extras.
