Toulon battled to a 15-9 victory over Bayonne at Stade Jean-Dauger on Sunday for a result that moves them up to fourth in the Top 14 standings.
Despite being down to fourteen men for a total of 20 minutes following yellow cards to Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe and Craig Burden, Toulon managed to secure a priceless win that sees them leapfrog Montpellier, who lost on Saturday.
No tries were scored in the contest as home side Bayonne took an early 0-9 advantage thanks to penalties from Stephen Brett by 19 minutes.
But the reigning Heineken Cup champions then turned the screw and ground out a victory, with Wilkinson landing four penalties and a drop-goal.
Toulon will host Oyonnax next weekend while Bayonne travel to Biarritz for the Basque derby.
