Alex Cuthbert scoring for Cardiff Blues

Two tries: Alex Cuthbert

Cardiff Blues picked up a 29-12 PRO12 win over Edinburgh on Sunday in a result that will give them confidence going into the Heineken Cup Pools.

Alex Cuthbert scored two tries in the victory, with his first score and eight points from Leigh Halfpenny giving the hosts a 13-12 interval lead.

Four penalties via Greig Laidlaw was the reply.

But the Blues dominated in the second half as Halfpenny added a trio of three-pointers and Wales' wing touched down for a key second try.

Cardiff and Edinburgh have struggled at the start of this campaign with the visitors going into the game in bottom position. It was therefore no surprise to see a cagey opening to proceedings as both teams looked to kick-start their seasons.

But it was Cardiff who began the encounter in the ascendency and a Halfpenny three-pointer put them in front after just four minutes. Laidlaw then levelled matters for the visitors before the Scotland international scrum-half kicked his second from the tee.

However, the Blues soon restored their lead when their full-back added a second three-pointer and Cuthbert touched down on the right wing.

Edinburgh continued to battle, though, and successive Laidlaw penalties brought them back to within one point at the break.

Cardiff went up a gear in the third quarter as their British and Irish Lions' full-back extended the advantage to 19-12 with a brace of three-pointers.

Cornell du Preez was then sin-binned as the Welsh region built yet another threatening attack and Halfpenny kicked the resultant opportunity.

With the opposition down to 14 men, the Blues surged forward once again and a superb move ended in Cuthbert touching down, which secured their second win of the season.
