Try for Newcastle: Mike Blair

Newcastle claimed a crucial victory in the battle to avoid relegation with a 16-11 win over Worcester at Sixways on Saturday.

Falcons extended Warriors' Premiership losing streak to five games with a narrow triumph.

The Falcons controlled the opening period and took a 13-3 lead into the interval through Mike Blair's try and two Rory Clegg penalties.

Worcester's sole response in the first half came through the boot of Ignacio Mieres before the fly-half added a second after the break.

David Lemi then crossed the whitewash to give the Warriors hope, but Phil Godman's late penalty sealed the victory for Newcastle.

This was a match between two of the teams expecting to be near the bottom of the table come the end of the season. Worcester, under the guidance of former Gloucester boss Dean Ryan, have endured a torrid start to the campaign. They went into the game against Newcastle winless in four and devoid of confidence, and Dean Richards' men took advantage of their uncertainty early on.

Clegg opened the scoring with a penalty for the visitors after a fine passage of play before another excellent move ended in Blair touching down.

The Tyneside-based outfit continued their stranglehold on proceedings with a second three-pointer from the fly-half.

However, the Warriors finally forced their way into the game and reduced the arrears at half-time to 13-3 through the boot of Mieres.

Oliver Tomaszczyk was also spending time off the field after being yellow carded just before the break.

Although the hosts failed to score while the prop was in the sin bin, they did finally get another three points through the boot of their fly-half with 48 minutes gone.

The game then descended into a scrappy affair as the importance of the situation became apparent, but it was Worcester who had the edge. And the deadlock was finally broken when Lemi touched down in the corner.

However, the crucial conversion was missed and Godman's late penalty secured a vital win for Newcastle.
