Young fly-half Rhys Patchell kicked all of Cardiff's points in their 21-10 win over Irish side Connacht at Arms Park.

The Blues headed into the match on the back of an opening-day defeat away at Glasgow, while Connacht were seeking their second victory in as many games following a narrow win over Zebre.

Connacht enjoyed the lion's share of possession and territory during the opening exchanges and took the lead in the 12th minute, when Matt Healy leaped over under the posts for Dan Park to convert.

But the seven-point cushion didn't last long, and within 15 minutes the lead was down to a single point as Patchell capitalised on home indiscipline twice to boot over penalty goals.

The hosts then hit the front six minutes from half-time when Patchell drilled over a drop-goal. But Parks was eagle-eyed with the boot too, and in the final minute of the first half he restored a slender lead for the visitors with a coolly taken penalty goal.

The second half would prove another tight affair, but the Blues' dominance around the ruck would take its toll as the hosts kept their opponents scoreless after the break.

Patchell's penalty 12 minutes into the second half gave Cardiff a lead they would retain for the remainder of the match, as their defence held resolute in the face of pressure from their Irish visitors.

Another three-pointer following further Connacht indiscipline stretched the hosts' lead out to five with time ticking away, before a penalty double from the irrepressible Patchell in the final five minutes sealed the victory for the hosts.
