Winning start: Clermont

Clermont shrugged off a spirited late fightback from Biarritz to record a 22-18 victory over the Basque outfit at Parc des Sports Aguilera on Saturday.

ASM went 13-0 ahead with a quarter of the game gone after two penalties from Brock James were backed up by a converted Regan King try.

But before the break Dimitri Yachvili sent over three points before James knocked over another penalty that was chalked off by BO fly-half Daniel Waenga, who slotted a 38th minutes drop-goal.

The second-half saw Biarritz come into their own as they scored five points through talismanic scrum-half Yachvili just before the hour mark.

However, two further penalties from James kept the hosts out of reach as a late Teddy Thomas try proved only to seal a losing bonus for Biarritz.
