Try for Bath: Carl Fearns

Bath pushed London Welsh closer to relegation from the Premiership on Saturday with a 40-25 bonus-point victory at the Rec.

Three tries in the first 15 minutes laid the foundations as Bath held off a London Welsh fightback to emerge victorious.

Welsh headed into the tie in torrid form and with their survival hopes having all but evaporated, while Bath were looking to bounce back from a shock defeat to Sale.

Matt Banahan got the ball rolling for the hosts when he broke through before crashing over out wide, the conversion was wide but just minutes later the lead was doubled when Carl Fearns scored following smart work at the line-out.

The conversion attempt rebounded away off the post, but Stephen Donald was on target with a penalty to make it 13-0.

Welsh got off the mark shortly after when Alex Davies booted over a penalty, and he added another a few minutes later after the visitors had threatened to breach Bath's tryline.

Davies continued to torment the hosts with the boot following further indiscipline, and the deficit was cut to just four points when he added a third penalty.

But Bath reaffirmed their dominance shortly after through a superb try from Semesa Rokoduguni, who crashed onto Donald's cut-out ball to stride over on the stroke of half-time.

Davies continued to show form with the boot following the restart, adding three penalties in 15 minutes to make it 20-18 and pile the pressure on the hosts, whose biggest foe was their own indiscipline.

But Bath gave themselves breathing space in the minutes that followed as Donald's penalty was followed by a converted Horacio Agulla try.

And, though Seb Jewell's try ensured a nervous end to the game for the hosts, Tom Heathcote's penalty in the dying minutes and Michael Claassens' try cemented the win.
