Jonny May Gloucester 2013

Eventful afternoon: Jonny May

Freddie Burns kicked five penalties as Gloucester came from behind to edge London Welsh 15-14 in a tight Premiership clash at Kingsholm on Saturday.

Neither side headed into this game in strong form, with Gloucester having tasted defeat away at Bath while Welsh's run of defeats continued unabated.

Burns' penalty in the six minutes put Gloucester in front but the hosts' indiscipline quickly cost them their lead as Gordon Ross seized the opportunity to boot London Welsh level.

The visitors then went ahead on 25 minutes when Ross added a second three-pointer, though the scores were level by the interval as Burns' penalty on the stroke of half-time sailed between the uprights.

The sin-binning of Jonny May for a deliberate knock-on early in the second half paved the way for Ross to put the visitors back in front, and Welsh gave themselves real hope of securing a crucial win on 52 minutes when a break from James Tideswell carved out an opportunity for Phil Mackenzie to score the game's first and only try.

The conversion was missed but Welsh held a 6-14 lead as the game approached the final quarter.

The visitors' indiscipline would cost them in the end though as Burns was on target with three penalty attempts in the final quarter to swallow up the eight-point deficit and give the hosts a decisive single-point advantage.

Burns' had the opportunity to establish a four-point cushion with one minute remaining and, though he was wide on that occasion, Gloucester were able to hold their plucky opponents at bay and complete a great escape against the Premiership's bottom club.
