Preview: Scotland v Wales

Scotland duo Geoff Cross celebrating with Stuart Hogg

Scotland: Can they make it three?

Scotland or Wales could move joint-top of the Six Nations and possibly overtake leaders England with a big victory at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Granted, such a possibility is expected to last for only 24 hours but applying pressure is going to be critical if they are to usurp the Red Rose in 2013.

England are in a strong spot and despite Sergio Parisse being back at the tail for the Azzurri, they should be in great shape going into Round 5.

Stuart Lancaster's men currently hold a 17 and 28-point cushion over Wales and Scotland respectively, which on form should grow at the end of the week. However, stranger things have happened in rugby than Italy finding away day form so the Celts won't be giving up just yet.

In contrast to Italy's travelling blues, it is worth noting that Wales approach this match gunning for their fifth straight Six Nations win on the road.

For the Scots of the 21st century, this is unchartered territory as they have not won three successive games in the tournament since it was the Five Nations - a 16-14 win over Wales in 1996 set up a Grand Slam shot against England, which they lost. Therefore, a victory should be their immediate objective.

"If you look at their squad, it's absolutely filled with Lions and world-class players," warned Scotland captain Kelly Brown when speaking of their opponent to the press this week.

"I would say it will be our toughest challenge in the championship so far but as a sportsman you want to be challenged by the top teams and there is no doubt Wales are one of those."

How Scotland beat Ireland continues to perplex and I don't think we will see a more one-sided half ultimately go in the other direction when a final whistle is blown. It was staggering to see Ireland claim 71 percent possession and 77 percent of the territory and still lose.

But, that is history, and Scotland approach their third and final home game of the Six Nations Championship full of confidence under Scott Johnson and Dean Ryan. The team selection sees two changes made as Geoff Cross - somewhat harshly - finds himself on the bench after what was an impressive effort against Ireland. His place goes to Euan Murray - who returns from missing their recent victory due to his religious beliefs - in a rugged pack.

For the Welsh, Justin Tipuric has been replaced by Sam Warburton in a move that hands the latter possibly his last opportunity to book a place on the Lions tour to Australia. He does not reclaim the captaincy, however, as Ryan Jones continues to excel in the responsibility, with his return coinciding with Wales' return to winning ways. Jones' experience has been key and it seems Rob Howley is buying into that as Alun-Wyn Jones also comes into the XV.

Howley's remaining change to the line-up that won well in Italy is Paul James coming into the loosehead spot for Gethin Jenkins, who has a calf injury. He fully deserves his start.

Much rests on whether Scotland can avoid another opening half that they were subjected to against Ireland as Wales will take the points on offer, thus building a lead the Irish could not. They've brought in Duncan Weir to help that process but I feel Wales should prevail.

Ones to watch:

For Scotland: The coaches will hope that change at fly-half sparks their attack. In truth we have yet to see Tim Visser and Sean Maitland given sufficient ball to motor so that needs to be addressed. Duncan Weir is the man charged with getting things going.

For Wales: It is a massive opportunity for Sam Warburton to shine. A good performance without the captaincy responsibility should nail down his place for next week's clash with England and another strong game in Cardiff is likely to see Warren Gatland include him.

Head-to-head: Ryan Grant and Geoff Cross were strong for Scotland against Ireland, but this week Cross is joined by Euan Murray as the starting props. The duo go up against an in-form Adam Jones while Paul James gets a run due to Gethin Jenkins' absence. James has been superb for Bath this year and this battle up front is going to be interesting. Richard Hibbard and Ross Ford may well be scrapping for the third Lions hooking spot.

I have to say, Scott Johnson was very magnanimous in defeat, saw where it went wrong, was frustrated with the ref, (who wasn't?), I wonder if he can conjure up a win in Paris?

@bambo

LOL..yes, that funny old chap who admires Joubert so much would surely have something to say.

i think joubert was a very good referee but the last half dozen games i've seen him ref he really has been very, very poor- and no, not just games where i have an interest. if you look back at media coverage it gets picked up a lot . increasingly. but he's a political chap who works the corridors at the irb...so we're stuck with him.

yes, of course refs miss things, but inconsistency is a different thing.

For the Lions mix I really hope for a good win from Scotland. But Warburton having a fantastic game, keeping it close to ensure England wins the tournament provided the beat Italy. Still think Wales are not the same without Lydiate and Scotland should take this. Time to remember Telfers comment... Lazy Wales will lose in the first half...

Scrum = Very even with maybe Wales edging it

Lineout = Scotland by miles.

Front row = Even

Second row = Scotland

Back row = Even

Half backs = Wales just

Centres = Wales

Back three = Even. Wales in terms of power and Scotland in terms of pace.

Should be a close game but I expect Wales to sneak it with a try caused by some weak tackling from Visser.

Not sure of the out come here, both teams have won there last two matches, without being entirely inspiring.

Joubert is a very good referee in my opinion and allows the game to flow like most SH officials, but know doubt whichever team loses it will be the fault of the official. As a Scot I'm hoping for a home victory, but only time well tell on that.

Careful Lacroix, to even suggest on PR that Joubert is not flawless (or 'almost flawless') could bring the wrath of justice down on you!

Joubert is a very good referee. 'Very good' in a sport like rugby means he will make mistakes, all related to pace of the game, sighting, 'noise' etc. Still, whilst even he, as you have heard first hand, admits that he makes mistakes, to fault a ref here is unacceptable for some. Somewhere right now a late middle aged gent (old enough to have fathered Joubert, if only, in his dreams) with an SA fixation is experiencing exploding apoplexy. Wait for the fallout.....:)

Too true @lacroix, particularly with Paul James in the scrum. Last time he propped against Murray he just went to ground every time and ended up winning some ridiculous penalties.

How very strange of you! A very unusual comment to make on a forum for rugby fans. Don't think I've ever referred to a rugby team in that way.. Tell me, do you and your BNP friends still suffer from bed wetting?!! :-D

should be an interesting game. as rugby rockstar says wales need to create...

very unfortunate for both teams that the dreadful joubert is refereeing as his inconsistency and incompetence at break down and set piece alike make it very hard for either set of forwards to know whats happening. and every chance the game will be decided on wrongly awarded penalties.

Well ive said all week i think Halfpennys kicking formand range ,will be the diferance between the teams.Unless Scotlands 1st up tackling improves,and they get the edge at the breakdown,so they not Wales can go though the phases and hopefully release a potent looking back 3 @Stumpy is so right,Scotland have been dominated every game so far in regards to possesion,and territory,for them to be victorious that has to change i feel.Its going to be close,unless theres yellow cards,and only 3-6 points in it at the end ,atm i think that will be to Wales because Halfpenny is in such good form ,espically at range.

@3in4

Thats a ridiculouse comment ,and really not worthy of you .Your posts are usually good and insightfull.There is however a score that means bith teams lose,ITS CALLED A DRAW,and means England will win the championship,not mater what happens next week.If they are victorious over Italy .

Wales to win. Scotlands best chance to nullify Wales is in the lineout. Scots will fancy their chances there. Wales should have the edge in the scrum. Wales look the more settled with Biggar getting a run of games. Weir starting will add more to the Scots backline than Jackson.....just hope he doesn't have to good a game.

Despite many positive aspects, Scotland have an abysmal record under Johnson of retaining posesion which needs to be addressed. We all know the little possesion they had against Ireland, but the same applied against England and Italy. When looking at prematch statistics, it reveals Scotland have won less turnovers than Wales in this 6 nations, and have actually conceeded 20 more! If Scotland fail to address this issue (e.g- commit more men to the rucks) then Wales and the reliable goal kicker of Lee Halfpenny will not face the same issue Ireland did, and will score enough points to put the Scots away. However, if Scotland finally get a firm (enough) grasp on possesion, they will be a team to be feared with a lethal back 3 and commited defence.

Wales defense was immense with both France and Italy. Their attacking flair is not quite there yet, however I think that they can bring more to the party than Scotland. I agree with PR.

"Scotland or Wales could move joint-top of the Six Nations and possibly overtake leaders England with a big victory at Murrayfield on Saturday." and I could possibly win the lottery jackpot and move to Queenstown and have a custom built eco house constructed upon the hills above Lake Wakatipu.

On a sensible note, it's looking like a dry day up in edinburgh so as long as the pitch is too waterlogged and I belive the pitch in edingburgh is one of the best in the world including under ground heating, then we should be in for a decent match. That's interesting becasue it means Wales have no excuses if they churn out the usual one dimension Noon and Tindal throwback style of rugby that's about as Welsh as bowler hats and prawn sandwiches. and if they do play like that then I back the scottish defense and competative lineout to stop them dead in their tracks and win by 8 points. So its over to you Jamie Roberts, are you actually going to pass the bloody ball??? at the moment I wouldn;t have him anywhere near the lions test team, which in turn gives Luke Marshall and Billy Twelvetrees a sniff. (afterall, we are playing on australian pitches.)
