Connacht stun Leinster

28th September 2012 22:14

George Naoupu of Connacht

Try-scorer: George Naoupu

Connacht claimed a shock 34-6 victory over Leinster in their PRO12 clash at the Sportsground in Galway on Friday.

Ian Madigan kicked the visitors into an early lead but Connacht struck the first meaningful blow after quarter of an hour when centre Dave McSharry crossed moments after Michael Swift had been held up over the line.

And, although Madigan kicked another three points for the Heineken Cup holders, it was the home side that looked the more incisive and McSharry turned provider midway through the first half as he set up Fetu'u Vainikolo to score.

Brendan Macken was sent to the sin bin for the final ten minutes of the half to make it even more difficult for Leinster. Their hosts took full advantage as Tiernan O'Halloran scored the third try of the night and debutant Dan Parks added a late penalty to make it 22-6 at the break.

Leinster battled hard in the second half but they struggled to gain any sort of momentum as Madigan missed a shot at goal and they were unable exploit a one-man advantage after O'Halloran was yellow-carded just after the hour mark.

Connacht kept their illustrious opponents at bay well and defended their own try-line resolutely when they had to before again taking advantage of having an extra man when Leo Auva'a was sin-binned in the final ten minutes.

The Dublin outfit's ill-discipline cost them once more as the excellent George Naoupu crossed to give the home side a deserved bonus point.

Replacement Ronan Loughney ran in a fifth try in the closing stages as well as Connacht recorded their second win of the season and condemned Leinster to their second defeat of the campaign.

what an shower of ballbags. first of all, all credit to connacht. great defence, attacked incisively and played us off the park - speaking of which, dan parks was excellent. a real good find for connacht

is this a time for Leinster to start panicking? important to remember they we've had rotten starts to the celtic league for a few seasons now. they lost the first 3 out of 4 in Schmidty's first season, after all. but there's something worrying about the abject nature of these losses, as well as the poor performances when we scraped wins against treviso and edinburgh

we now have the worst defence in the whole league: most points and most tries conceded. the missed tackles are one thing - this can be explained by early season rustiness and the amount of young lads in the team...but the most worrying thing of all is the passive retreating defensive line. if we don't sort this out soon we'll be annihilated by even better teams than connacht

even in attack, we seemed to be bereft of ideas. what happened to slowly building the phases? they were constantly using one-off runners last night, totally aimless, allowing players to get isolated and turned over

a bit early to call this a crisis. after all we do have a number of second-teamers on the injury list (if even Dommers, Rudders, Boss, Mallers and Kearns the Younger had played last night, we might have made a better fist of it). and we have the chance to turn things around against the red sh*te next week - we know the lads will be up for that. but there are a quite a few things that will be giving Schmidty cause for concern at the moment

Wow! There were some big names there for Leinster. Kearney, Nacewa McFadden,Darcy and Heinke van der Merwe. Fair play to Connacht from a Leinster fan.

Wow that was something, great game. I mean 5 tries against Leinster sounds pretty huge. I just watched the last 15 mins and Leinster looked pretty stunned!

must be one of those banana skins on the way, but well deserved Connacht.

Leinster's turnover was an epic fail. Munster did much better with its "second line".

Leinster looked bland, almost brainless for the whole match. I'm pretty sure they broke the record for 'most amount of mistakes made in one match' as well... they were just appalling, a disgrace to the Jersey!

As expected! When Leinster will decide to field their best squad, it will be too late. A bit disrespectful for the competition.

well, we were crap - no other word for it...Connacht completely outplayed us and Dan Parks has proven to be one of the best buys of the season...hard to find a decent Leinster performance on the pitch tonight....no excuses, awful display and we were beaten by a much better team tonight
