Highlanders: Defeat leaves play-off hopes hanging by a thread

The Highlanders' chances of making the Super Rugby finals took a turn for the worst after losing 27-21 to the Chiefs in Dunedin on Friday.

Both sides crossed the whitewash twice, but the boot of Aaron Cruden proved to be the difference between the two sides as the All Blacks pivot punished persistent ill-discipline by the Highlanders.

Cruden contributed 17 points from the tee, including five penalties, to help his team cement their place on top of the tournament standings as the leaders all but secured themselves a home semi-final.

The Highlanders did manage to bag a losing bonus point, which could prove vital for the southerners heading into the final straight with a bye and a must-win clash against the Reds coming up in the next fortnight.

Chiefs wing Tim Nanai-Williams opened the scoring in the third minute for the visitors after Highlanders halfback Aaron Smith was caught in possession. Sonny Bill Williams and Tawera Kerr-Barlow combined brilliantly on the counter to release Nanai-Williams, who just did enough to score.

Cruden duly converted and the Chiefs had a handy 7-0 lead with barely five minutes gone on the clock

The Highlanders responded with a simple penalty from pivot Chris Noakes but it was cancelled out by Cruden's first three-pointer of the night.

The home side were dominating possession and territory but they were only able to add two further penalties from Noakes as the Chiefs defence held firm.

And the Chiefs made them pay before the break - with another error allowing the visitors to turn defence into attack. Noakes' clearance was charged down, allowing the Chiefs to snaffle possession and although Kerr-Barlow was tackled he was able to combine with Williams once again to release full-back Robbie Robinson to run in unopposed.

Cruden missed the conversion but he slotted over a penalty after the hooter had sounded to put the Chiefs 18-9 in front at half-time. And Cruden was on target again 20 seconds after the break as the Highlanders infringed from the restart.

Ten minutes in, a Sonny Bill Williams shoulder charge started some pushing and shoving between several players. Williams was penalised, the Highlanders drove for the line and were rewarded when Andrew Hore was adjudged to have touched down by the TMO.

Noakes missed the conversion to leave the home side down by seven with half an hour left.

Cruden then gave the Chiefs a 10-point cushion with a well-struck penalty before following it up with his sixth successful shot at goal.

However the Highlanders refused to give up and Hosea Gear's try with five minutes left - the winger powering over from close range - and Mike Delany's conversion set up a nail-biting finale.

The home side gave their all in the final moments - with play continuing long after the hooter - but the Chiefs were able to keep them out.

@ Trader2 & porridge_time - Haskell's never been about pace, let's be honest. He's a powerfully-build back-row forward, not a racing snake by anyone's reckoning. But I think his time in Japan and Super Rugby will have served him well.

As I stated on another thread, there is still a different style north of the equator. Our set piece is, imo, far superior and we hold it in such high esteem as to be to the detriment of the rest of the game. In contrast the Super teams like to get it out of the set piece and run with it.

Not better, not worse, just different.

And at international level, the only team who seem to be able to do both well are those darned Kiwis!

@APV1 I thought it was more like a foot in the mouth. Being serious for a momemt I thought Haskell's spell in Dunedin was pretty good (apart from the normal Pom forward brain explosion) but his game has improved and he was well worth it for the Highlanders. Maybe we will see some more of you lot coming down south to finesse their game and find out a little about attacking running rugby.

Haskell is not up to the pace and skill set required for the top end of Super Rugby... thought he has been average at best in his showings forbthe Highlanders, but fair play to him for giving it a go

@ Trader2 - I actually watched the match, numnuts2. It was a tongue-in-cheek comment about him not starting.

@isthatrightref yes after the Hurricanes win I think the Fat Lady is singing, they will be dangerous against the Reds, a last hurrah, they can go either way so either a narrow win for the Landers or the Red's will win easily, will depend on the Highlanders mood I think.

Waz a good tough game and enjoyed watching it...looking at the standings the highlanders still have a slim chance but need results to go there way....

@ Trader2... love your optimism & would dearly love your blokes to stuff the Rids this week (I'm actually starting to miss the master baiter's post-loss excuses) but while I reckon you've a fair chance of winning, I can't help but feel that a bonus point may be expecting too much: Highlanders have the same win/loss stats as H'canes but are 8th both in points for & against. If someone forced me to take a bet I'd go Highlanders by 2 - 5 which is enough to finish the Rids but, sadly, not enough to keep your lot in it.

I thought Highlanders played pretty well really, Chiefs defence is well organised, most defences are, They had enough ball they forced enough penalties to win it really, lacking a goog goalkicker killed them in the end. The Fat Lady is not singing yet but she is warming up, will need some surprise other results to go with our bonus point win next week in Brisbame.

@ bk47... reverse psychology old son - I've noticed that if someone gets on early with an over-the-top "comment" on the ref there seem to be fewer actual ref-bashing posts & we can concentrate on the footy. Or maybe even the ref-bashers are getting bored typing the same sh1te every week?

@ master baiter... jober as a sudge I was (doing taxi duty for the niece) which may explain why I got it into my head that the Brumbies were on straight after the Rids... so yeah, I feel as silly as a Wobbly prop who needs the ref to tell him where he's meant to stick his head at scrum time :-)

I think SBW is starting to practise shoulder tackles in preparation for his imminent NRL return... That said, another strong game from him. Crosswell lucky to not be yellow carded for his Cooper like punch (def of a Cooper punch - from behind, with no actual effect). Pathetic.

This game was high intensity, fast, with a high level of skill. A gritty victory for the Chiefs. The Reds v Rebels was a powder puff affair compared to this.

@isthatrightref This game was played in the spirit of rugby. Very few cynical penalties, your comments are garks

And that, barring a series of results that not even PO'B - yes, the RWC rigger in chief Himself - could conjure up even with a small army of Bryce & Craig clones at his disposal/ commmand, is the end of the road for the Highlanders... hate it when my "Chiefs win, Highlanders bonus point" brain trumps my "Highlanders sneak home after the hooter any way they can" heart but them's the breaks... just hope my Crusaders can avoid losing to the Horrorcanes as they seem wont to do at this end of the season...

A thought occurs: when 2 x cheating kiwi teams meet, how does the cheating kiwi ref know which team to let win? Are orders handed down from SANZAR HQ? Or are they given a free hand on the basis that either way a kiwi team wins so who cares which? I ollk forward to the usual ref-bashers' thoughts on this matter. I'm off to the pub now to catch the Brumbies (I hope) putting the Rids' season to bed...
