Chiefs: Hang on to beat Bulls
The Chiefs returned to top spot on the Super Rugby standings thanks to a hard-fought 28-22 victory over the Bulls in Hamilton on Friday.
In a bruising see-saw battle, the Chiefs - who trailed by eight points (8-16) at the break - outscored the Bulls three tries to one.
Replacement forward Sam Cane dived over for what proved to be the match-winner with 10 minutes of the game remaining, although the result was never guaranteed until the final whistle against a desperate Bulls side.
Springbok pivot Morne Steyn, who finished with 17 points, kept his side in touch with his trusty boot. However it wasn't enough to save the visitors from suffering back-to-back defeats.
The three-time Super Rugby champs did, however, manage to bag a crucial losing bonus point and will head home with two wins and two losses from their Australasian tour.
The win lifts the Chiefs' points tally to 53 - eleven points ahead of the Crusaders at the top of the New Zealand conference and four clear of the Stormers at the top of the table,
It was the Bulls who struck first thanks to a trademark Steyn penalty to put the South Africans in front, before opposite number Aaron Cruden put his team on the board in the 15th minute.
Steyn added a drop-goal, but the Chiefs hit back after an error by wing Akona Ndungane inside his 22 allowed full-back Andrew Horrell to toe the ball ahead and dot down for the opening try.
Cruden added the extras and the hosts were in front 8-6. But Steyn's second penalty kick helped the Bulls leapfrog the Chiefs by one point (8-9) heading into half-time.
That was until prolific winger Bjorn Basson wriggled free of Lelia Masaga and dove over in the corner just seconds before the siren, and Steyn's conversion made the score 16-8 as the players went into the sheds.
The Bulls started the second half with a roar and a hiss but Cruden halted the visitors' momentum with another three-pointer from the tee to close the gap, before Steyn was once again on target to extend his team's lead to back to eight points.
From a set-piece move, the Chiefs eventually re-took the lead after wing Aseli Tikoirotuma took an inside pass from Cruden to motor over the tryline untouched. Cruden converted and it was game on (21-19).
The Bulls weren't prepared to roll over just yet and another Steyn penalty gave them a one-point lead (21-22) with a quarter of the match remaining.
That was until a classic offload from Sonny Bill Williams put the supporting Cane under the posts to give the Chiefs the ascendancy yet again.
With the clock winding down, the Bulls had one last throw of the dice to pull off a win in a frantic final period, but the Chiefs managed to hang on for a well-earned victory.

At least we're not knee-deep in something-bok & bok-something bile as we would've been had the other Lawrence been the ref... or is ML now part of the world wide conspiracy too?
Congrats Chiefs & Messam on his milestone... can't wait for the Crusaders rematch, should be an absolute ripper

Don't think too bad for SA sides as Crusaders are the best Kiwi team, so best to have them playing away in semi finals. Can't see that Chiefs team beating the BULLS at Loftus in front of 500000, and think Stormers/Sharks will have a chance of beating them home or away. Amazing how poor Kiwi lineout works is, just as how poor SA teams are at the counter ruck. It was a great game and all the best to the Chiefs, who did absorb a lot of pressure. Still nothing better for me than a Kiwi vs SA game of rugby, just still so special. Just great SA Teams are getting better year after year. We used to get hammered in the past but are a lot more competitive now. Wish someone would penalise Kiwi no arm tackles !!

Brilliant game - and brilliant win for the Chiefs! And Mark Lawrence showed why he is my favourite referee - a master class to young referees.

Good "D" by the Chiefs, all guts and attitude! I thought the Bulls looked typically strong and willing if not also typically one dimensional. Watch out for the Sharks! On another note...What is being done about the line-outs in NZ? Is Liam Messam sending a message to the selectors?

Wish every week could be filled with rugby games like this, well done the Chiefs coming from 16 - 8 down and showing your true quality. Very proud of the Bulls, a great showing and really 2 wins & bonus point loses on tour is a good showing. Quality rugby all round.

Chiefs didn't play particularly well but hats off to the Bulls who are the business.
But probably summed up well by my mate who doesn't know a lot about rugby; he reckons the Bulls forwards were subbed one at a time looking f****d. Not sure about MoM but Afeaki was awesome, Horrell is a cool head and the icing provided by SBW. Kerr-Barlow looked a little short of match practice.

Mark Lawrence should have been at the world cup. Sonny Bill is just starting to work out how to play rugby - will that get him no 12 for the ABs? Some massive defense from Liam Messam tonight.
Agree with davo - great to see adventure and try scoring beat the rolling maul - its just another name for obstruction

PR prediction spot on !
I am biased but its so heartwarming to see slight of hand prevail over grunt and drop kick . SA ref so maybe no complaints from the usual suspect .

Horrell was outstanding! Glad they won, they looked kinda scrappy.
unlucky for the Bulls, i thought defended well and put in pressure for most of the game. shame they couldnt convert the pressure into tries

Well played Chiefs. I cannot figure out why with 5 minutes left on the clock the Bulls need a converted try to win and Steyn gives away position to a team that knows how to close out a game. Crazy

Well done Chiefs! Nice come back, it was looking dicey halfway through the 2nd half.
Fair to say they have their destiny in their own hands now. Chiefs at home in the final... I wouldn't bet against them. The Stormers HAVE to beat the Sharks to keep up the pressure...

Chiefs deserved the win. A highly focused and very fit team. Definately my pick as 2012 champions. Bulls looking very battle wary now.

Enjoyed that game. Chiefs lineout really under pressure for the first time but the Bulls made mistakes under pressure in the dewy, slippery conditions. If only this game had been played on a sunny afternoon instead of catering for the NH times who fans probably wont watch it anyway.
Felt for Latimer, being replaced by the new young gun (according to Hansen) after he had played so well and then immediately Cane gets the crucial try!
Another top game from Liam Messam and Horrell looks better each game. Top comments from Spies at the end.
