Tiaan Liebenberg Stormers v Waratahs 2012

Tiaan Liebenberg: Celebrates after scoring the Stormers' second try

The Stormers moved to the top of the Super Rugby standings on Saturday after defeating the Waratahs 19-13 in a dour affair at Newlands in Cape Town.

The home side produced a vastly improved attacking display but it was not enough to earn them a highly sought-after bonus point.

Leading 16-6 at the break, a bonus-point seemed possible after the Stormers scored two first-half tries.

In the second half, however, they showed a fair amount of enterprise but could not add to their first-half try count.

In the opening minutes, there was a succession of kicks from both sides and a reluctance to run the ball from anywhere within their own half.

The ploy did not bring any reward as the kicks were always too deep and did not pose problems inside the opposition half.

The Waratahs resorted to Berrick Barnes repeatedly kicking up-and-unders but the Stormers' backs, notably Joe Pietersen, Gio Aplon and Peter Grant, showed great courage with number of brave catches under pressure.

On one occasion, the Stormers failed to clear adequately as they infringed and Waratahs scrum-half Brendan McKibbin goaled the resultant penalty.

The Stormers, on the other hand, changed gear after 10 minutes and showed enterprise by opting for strong runs with ball in hand.

Aplon provided the spark with a fine break from the halfway line before he was held up 10 metres out.

The Stormers spun the ball wide from the breakdown and Pietersen dived over the corner for the opening try of the match. Grant's conversion failed.

Pietersen made it 8-3 in the 22nd minute with a 35-metre penalty and this advance gave the Stormers' game a decided lift before the halftime break.

The Waratahs were forced to settle for a defensive role and they did well to stifle several promising sorties into their 22-metre area, except one which materialised in a try by hooker Tiaan Liebenberg.

The conversion by Grant failed but he atoned with a penalty a few minutes ahead of the break.

The Waratahs took the Stormers by surprise at the start of the second half with a strong attack down the outside far right channel where centre Rob Horne rounded off splendidly with a try.

McKibbin followed his conversion with a penalty moments later and reduced the deficit to three points.

The Stormers shrugged off the setback with a penetrative move past the Waratahs 10-metre line and their pressure caused the visitors to incur a penalty which Grant goaled to open up a six-point lead.

Every so often, the Stormers opened up the game with some fine attacking play but the Waratahs' defence coped well with all the variations thrown at them.

@Trinats, mate exactly, the Tahs should have won that game but they lost it through their own undoing. Although must admit the Stormers defense was phenomenal.

I'll have a double OP mate, cheers.

Honestly we need a better head coach. IMHO Michael Foley is a good forwards coach but I just don't see him having the nous to be a head coach. Nice enough bloke but that's not what we need. The Tahs need a White or McKenzie, blokes with a more holistic understanding and strong leadership.

Wallaroo offering my shoulder mate, or a rumbo. Tahs had that game in the bag, if they could hold onto the pill. Lost count of how many times they knocked on with the try line begging. Tahs unlucky, again.

Crap game to watch, fell asleep twice !! Not sure if it's the late nights or the Saffa style of rugby !!!!

This season seems to be almost a mirror image of last year. Great defence again but no bonus points.. that home semi and final is soo important. If they play like that against the sharks they will get murdered. You have to go down to 12th in the ladder to find a team who have scored less points (last time I looked). With the players they have they should be scoring tries.. something is wrong.. very wrong. Its kinda like they are playing not to lose rather than to win. I agree with the comments about defending your way to the title.. Not going to happen

Stormers were ordinary by their standards and made a lot of mistakes. Their lineout was poor and thier scrumming suspect. Of their Springbok backs, only Grant, de Jongh and Aplon are showing some form --De Villiers is erratic in defence and his passing lets him down as it did in RWC--and Habana tries hard but hasn't much clue and has lost his previous pace. Pietersen is their standout back. So given that, we can say with some confidence that the SA selectors will definitely pick de Villiers and Habana, probably will not pick Aplon and definitely won't pick Pietersen. Grant will not match Steyn or Lambie, which is fair enough, and Goosen is unlikely to be available.

stormers are a good side, best SA side comfortably but the tahs deserved to win this one, dominated the second half in all aspects.

Unlucky for the Tahs, was really hopin they'd pull off an upset here.

The Stormers inability to score a bonus point is unbelievable! Well done though...

I'm glad that the Stormers won but you can''t defend your way to a Super Rugby title. I'd be tempted to move Joe Pietersen into fly-half or at least see him in first receiver more often. Shift Grant into 12 and de Villiers into 13 for a couple of games so they can get a bit of momentum in that back-line, because whatever they are doing is just not working. Very worrying, not just for their own campaign but also for the Springboks, who will surely feature de Villiers, de Jongh and Habana in the backline.
