Wasps v Worcester Elliot Daly Jake Abbott New Years Day

Elliot Daly and Jake Abbott lock horns at Adams Park

Worcester's 6-0 victory at Adams Park meant Wasps started 2012 with a fifth successive defeat in the Aviva Premiership.

Joe Carlisle kicked two penalties as Worcester managed to keep Wasps scoreless throughout in a hard-fought win.

Wasps dominated possession early on in very slippery conditions at Adams Park after an unfortunate and lengthy early injury break as Worcester number eight Ezra Taylor was stretchered from the field.

Unfortunately, neither side managed to get to grips with playing in the rain at all as the half wore on though and a scrappy first period was punctuated by regular handling errors and two further injury delays.

Christian Wade and Nicky Robinson both hobbled off for the home side and were replaced by Chris Mayor and Ryan Davis respectively before Worcester finally took the lead right on the stroke of half-time with a penalty from Joe Carlisle.

The second half continued in the same vain with attacking opportunities at a premium and Davis failed with a drop goal and penalty attempt early on.

Worcester winger Marcel Garvey was then dispatched to the sin bin after obstructing his opposite number Tom Varndell but Wasps failed to make their numerical advantage count.

And when the London outfit did finally create an opening, South African lock Marco Wentzel delivered the pass behind Elliot Daly and the chance fizzled out.

Daly also pulled a penalty attempt wide of the posts and the visitors made Wasps pay for their profligacy with ten minutes remaining as Carlisle added another three points to make it 6-0.

On any other day a 6-0 lead might have seemed fragile but in this rain-soaked, stop-start encounter, it appeared almost insurmountable and so it proved as Worcester emerged victorious in one of the lowest-scoring Premiership matches in recent memory.
