Try-time: Tim Swinson crosses for Newcastle in their win over Lyon

With the big brother taking centre stage, we round-up Saturday's action in the 2011/12 Amlin Challenge Cup.

I Cavalieri Prato 3-33 Dragons

The Dragons crossed for five tries to beat Italian side I Cavalieri Prato in their opening Amlin Challenge Cup clash at Stadio Lungobisenzio.

Wings Aled Brew and Tonderai Chavhanga, lock Robert Sidoli, flanker Lewis Evans and full-back Martyn Thomas all touched down for five-pointers.

Fly-half Jason Tovey slotted over four of his side's five conversions to give the vicitors a perfect start to their Euro campaign.

The scorers:

For the Dragons:

Cons: Tovey 4

Femi-CZ Rovigo 10-43 Bayonne

Bayonne scored six tries on the way to recording a 43-10 away victory over Rovigo.

French International centre Thibault Lacroix opened the scoring the first of his two tries after six minutes. Bayonne skipper Benjamin Boyet added the conversion and then a penalty three minutes later.

Cedric Heymans then grabbed his side's second score which Boyet also converted before German Bustos scored Rovigo's only points of the half with a penalty of his own.

It was the hosts who started the brighter in the second period with lock Tommaso Reato touching down after 43 minutes.

From that point on though it was one-way traffic as the French side scored a further four tries. Jean Jospeh Marmouyet grabbed the first before Lacroix helped himself to his second score of the afternoon.

All Black legend Joe Rokocoko scored his first try in European rugby before Marmouyet's second.

Newcastle Falcons 27-19 Lyon Olympique

Newcastle earned a comfortable 27-19 victory over Lyon at Kingston Park.

Two first-half tries from lock Tim Swinson proved the difference between the two sides in Pool Two.

Scrum-half Jordi Pasqualin crossed for the Falcons' third try straight after half-time before Lyon's impressive number eight Nicolas Bontinick responded with Lyon's first European try three minutes later.

Indiscipline proved a major problem for the French outfit as they had three players - lock Arnaud Dorier, centre Latu Alipate Fatafehi and Bontinck - sin-binned during the contest.

The scorers:

For Newcastle Falcons:
Tries: Swinson, Fitzpatrick, Pasqualin
Pens: Manning 4

For Lyon Olympique:
Tries: Bontinck Penalties: Tomamichel 3, Loursak
Cons: Tomamichel

Brive 26-18 Sale Sharks

Sale faced a tough task in their opening Amlin Challenge Cup game at Brive.

They finished far better than they started, pulling back from 26-6 down after 47 minutes and overcoming the loss of David Seymour and Fraser McKenzie through yellow cards.

With the clock on zero, Nick Macleod had a difficult chance for a losing bonus-point with a penalty from out wide, but he just missed.

Brive's tries came via Scott Spedding and Mathias Atayi while Riaan Swanepoel kicked sixteen points.

The scorers:

For Brive:

Bordeaux-Bègles 17-47 London Wasps

Wasps got their Amlin Challenge Cup campaign off to a strong start as they scored six tries in a convincing win at Bordeaux-Begles that will send shock waves through the second tier.

Impressive wing Christian Wade claimed a hat-trick inside the first 24 minutes at Stade Chaban-Delmas while Dom Waldouck Tom Varndell and Nic Berry added further tries.

Wade scored his first try after only a minute and despite Felix Le Bourhis pegging one back for the home side, Wade then added two more tries before replacement Waldouck also got over for a score that capped his comeback from serious long-term injury.

Thierry Brana scored early in the second half for Bordeaux but then wing Varndell and scrum-half Berry crossed with Nicky Robinson kicking the extras for Dai Young's outfit.

For Bordeaux-Bègles:
Tries: Le Bourhis, Brana
