Freddie Burns: Crosses over for his try

Freddie Burns was Gloucester's hero as he scored 14 points in their 24-19 victory over Exeter at Sandy Park on Saturday.

After Exeter fly-half Gareth Steenson gave his side a 3-0 lead in the first minute, Gloucester's forwards began to show their strength.

Having earned a penalty from the opening scrum of the match, they opted to kick to the corner and from the resulting lineout they created enough space for Burns to touch down.

Not to be outdone, the Chiefs pack won a series of scrums and after laying siege to the Gloucester try line, prop Hoani Tui crashed over from a yard out to give them an 8-7 lead.

Although he missed the conversion, Steenson did add another three points with a penalty after half an hour.

With just five minutes remaining in the first half though, Fijian back-rower Akapusi Qera produced a typically powerful run, breaking a number of tackles on his way to restoring Gloucester's lead.

It did not take long for the Cherry and Whites to extend their advantage in the second half as towering lock Jim Hamilton stole a lineout and after putting the ball through a number of hands, Olly Morgan went over in the corner.

The match then descended into a rather scrappy affair as Exeter made a host of substitutions and replacement fly-half Ignacio Mieres exchanged penalties with Freddie Burns to make the score 24-14.

Gloucester seemed relatively comfortable and content to see out the remainder of the game but the Chiefs fought hard until the very end and got some reward in the final minute in the shape of a losing bonus point.

Replacement scrum-half Kevin Barrett came up with an interception and winger Matt Jess scored in the corner to make the final score 24-19.
