Ospreys hold on in Italy

Justin Tipuric Sept 2011

Winning try: Justin Tipuric

The Ospreys had to fight hard for a 32-27 win over Treviso in Saturday's Rabodirect Pro12 at Stadio Monigo.

Tries from Tom Isaacs and Justin Tipuric either side of half-time helped Ospreys to a nail-biting victory.

Treviso's Chris Burton and Osprey's Daniel Biggar traded two early penalties in the opening 15 minutes to make it 6-6, before Italian international Luca Morisi gave his side the lead at the end of the first quarter with the first try of the match.

Burton was unable to add the extras however and Biggar narrowed their hosts lead to just two points with a drop goal minutes later.

Osprey's cause was helped when Marco Filippucci was sent to the sin-bin, and the visitors were in front when Biggar knocked over his third penalty of the afternoon on 33 minutes.

That made it 11-12 to the Swansea outfit but there'd 14 more points scored before the half-time hooter sounded. Benjamin Vermaak crossed for Treviso's second try of the afternoon to put the hosts in front, before Ospreys responded with a their first try courtesy of Tom Isaacs.

Both scores were converted, making it 18-19 to the visitors at the interval.

Ospreys took less than five minutes following the restart to add their second try. Young Welsh International Justin Tipuric was the man to get over the line, and Biggar's second successful conversion gave his side an eight point advantage.

A Biggar penalty on the hour mark edged Ospreys further in front, but Treviso ensured a tight finish with three penalty goals from Willem De Waal.

His effort three minutes from time took the Italians to within two, but a Kristian Phillips penalty in the dying minutes helped settle Ospreys' nerves.
