The Waratahs extended their Super Rugby season on Saturday with a 41-7 victory over the Brumbies booking their place in the play-offs next week.

It looked like being another frustrating day for the Sydney fans though, as their side started well but then fell back into their now customary slumber.

But they showed enough in the final half-hour to make the team hosting them in the knockouts wary. Holding the Brumbies to 0 for 79 minutes was also an impressive feat for the hosts.

The result means that either the Bulls or Sharks, who are scheduled to play later today, will have their campaign come to an abrupt end at Loftus.

As mentioned, the Waratahs flew out of the blocks with key weapon Kurtley Beale leading the charge as he bounced off Andrew Smith before sending Lachie Turner for a free run to the whitewash on only three minutes. The full-back's extras must have made Sharks and Bulls followers' midday meal start to taste a touch off. It later got worse.

Despite the Brumbies struggling for any sustained period of possession, the 'Tahs had to wait until early in the second half for their next score, impressive second-row forward Sitaleki Timani driving over from close range.

Chris Alcock crossed after an hour, crashing through four tackles to make it 27-0, and Sosene Anesi won a foot race to touch down a Luke Burgess kick-ahead nine minutes later.

Dave Dennis then capped a fine personal display by diving over with two minutes to play before the Brumbies got a consolation try in the final action of the game when Matt Giteau made a score for replacement winger Francis Fainifo, who was a late inclusion to the 22.
