Ice breaker: Tim Molenaar scored Gloucester's first try

Gloucester moved five points ahead of Northampton in the race for the Aviva Premiership play-offs with a 27-15 win at Kingsholm on Tuesday.

Gloucester took a big step towards securing a third-placed finish in Premiership with victory over fourth-placed Northampton

Jim Mallinder's Heineken Cup semi-finalists opened the scoring through prop Alex Waller's early try but the Cherry and Whites steadily moved through the gears to illustrate their class.

Waller touched down in the ninth minute to put Saints ahead with a try that fly-half Shane Geraghty could not convert and the pendulum quickly swung in the hosts' favour.

Four minutes later Tim Molenaar went over and Nicky Robinson added the extras to put Gloucester ahead.

Freddie Burns then added a penalty in the 19th minute and as Gloucester continued to probe it came as no surprise when they breached Northampton's line again in the 27th minute.

This time it was Charlie Sharples' turn to touch down and Burns added the extras and then booted a penalty six minutes after the break as the match slipped further away from Saints.

In the 51st minute the Cherry and Whites registered their third try as hooker Olivier Azam went for a score which Burns converted. To Northampton's credit they refused to buckle and hit back through Lee Dickson's try which Geraghty converted but it was not enough to earn a losing bonus point.
