Jonny Wilkinson kicked 16 points as Toulon beat Bourgoin 26-3 in the Top 14 on Friday, but the big-spending side failed to grab the bonus point which would have put them top.
Bourgoin, who went into the game having won just once in seven games this season, and were firmly rooted to the foot of the table, were ahead after six minutes when Argentine fly-half Alberto di Bernardo kicked a penalty.
From that point, however, it was all downhill.
Toulon were 16-3 ahead at the interval thanks to a 37th-minute try from Fiji centre Gabirieli Lovobalavu which was converted by Wilkinson.
The England flay-half also kicked two penalties as well as a drop goal in the first 40 minutes.
Former All Black winger Rudi Wulf added a second try in the 63rd minute, smartly stepping inside two tackles with Wilkinson, who had added another drop goal three minutes after the interval, converting.
"It's a shame we couldn't get the bonus point," said Toulon scrum-half Pierre Mignoni.
"We were playing well tonight, the scrum was performing and the defence absorbed everything that came their way. We were able to kill it off quickly." Mignoni said Toulon were beginning to find their best form, having also seen off Agen and champions Clermont in their most recent outings.
"The start of the season was a little difficult," he said. "We were late in coming back and there were a lot of new players. I'm not making excuses but we were not ready to play at our best level."
