Northland kept their hopes of making the top seven of the ITM Cup alive with a deserved 13-8 win over Otago in Dunedin on Sunday.
It was the first time the Taniwha won at Carisbrook since 1979 and ended 31 years of pain after leading just 3-0 at half-time.
The result also ends the struggling Otago's two-match winning burst, in a performance marred by some shaky work in the line-out and inability to take advantage of long periods on attack.
Northland captain Jared Payne scored the match-winning try for the Taniwha in the 71st minute. Lachie Munro scored the rest of Northland's points with two penalties and a conversion, while Hayden Triggs' scored Otago's only try.
