Ryan Kankowski against Free State Cheetahs

Super effort: Ryan Kankowski

A late Rory Kockott try handed the Sharks a bonus point as they beat the Cheetahs 30-16 in an exciting match in Durban on Saturday.

The Sharks led 18-9 at half-time thanks to tries from number eight Willem Alberts and wing Odwa Ndungane.

Sharks number eight Ryan Kankowski was the stand-out figure having created Ndungane's try with a scintillating run from the base of a scrum and generally terrorising the visitors' defence.

Alberts was first to get his over the line with a powerful run from short range to finish under the posts.

The Sharks however were giving away plenty of penalties in their own territory and Cheetahs kickers Louis Strydom and Meyer Bosman were able to put their side 9-7 ahead.

Patrick Lambie restored the lead from the kicking tee before Kankowski burst clear, left a handful of Cheetahs defenders in his dust before off-loading to Ndungane for the Durbanites' second try.

The Cheetahs were back in touch soon after the restart however when lock Francois Uys squeezed the ball onto the whitewash from the base of a ruck.

Strydom's conversion left the scores at 18-16 going into the final half-an-hour.

A late burst handed the Sharks a bonus point a deprived the Cheetahs of one as first scrum-half Charl McLeod broke clear before his replacement, Kockott, escaped down the touchline to score the fourth try in the dying minutes.
