Frans Steyn against Montauban

Defeat for Frans Steyn and Racing

Montauban held off a spirited second-half fightback from Top 14 play-off hopefuls Racing-Métro 92 as they prevailed 45-31 at Sapiac on Saturday.

The win was a much-needed shot in the arm for the home side, who have now given themselves an improved chance of beating the trapdoor.

Racing arrived hoping for points that would do their knockout hopes a power of good, but ended up falling as the partisan crowd got their wish.

Tries from Rida Jahouer, Jean-Philippe Viard and Julien Larroque were bolstered by the boot of Cédric Rosalen, who knocked over 24 points in all. Meanwhile, Racing's scores came via Sireli Bobo, Julien Saubade and sixteen points from former All Black fly-half Andrew Mehrtens.

The Parisians have now joined Toulon, Biarritz, Clermont and Perpignan in leaving Sapiac with their tails between their legs, not a bad list of scalps for a team languishing near the basement.
