Blues crush Dragons in local derby

Cardiff Blues secured an emphatic 40-13 Magners League bonus-point victory over the Dragons on Friday at Rodney Parade.

The visitors thoroughly deserved the success by dominating in attack and turning over the many Dragons mistakes with regularity.

The Dragons stunned Llanelli Scarlets at Stradey Park last Saturday during the same first quarter of the game - only this time they were on the receiving end.

There was only one 39-metre shot at goal for the home team by stand-off Aled Thomas, while the Blues went on the rampage.

Three tries came in just 15 minutes as Blues left wing Jamie Roberts ran 30 metres for the opener.

Outside-half Nicky Robinson landed a 35 metre penalty soon afterwards before a piece of work by Robinson put former Wales full-back Rhys Williams, playing on the right wing, over in the corner.

It was not looking good for the Dragons as the Blues, who beat the Ospreys a week earlier, got their third touchdown on 24 minutes when centre Tal Selley raced in unopposed from 35m.

Thomas managed to reduce the home arrears with a straightforward penalty on the half hour but, with Selley causing havoc, the Blues thrust on towards the break.

The Dragons were reduced to 14 men when Thomas was sin-binned for tripping Williams and Selley made them pay with another Blues try, going in unopposed on the right wing.

Robinson converted but soon the Blues were a man down themselves as lock Paul Tito was binned for deliberately pulling down a maul.

Flanker Richard Parks gave the Dragons some hope with a converted try but it soon fell apart as replacement Joe Bearman was binned for pulling down a maul and Robinson landed the 45m penalty.

Replacement Mark Lewis then drove over near the posts and Robinson added a conversion and a deft drop goal to finish things off.
