Rene Ranger NZ v France 2013

Flown in: Rene Ranger

New Montpellier recruit Rene Ranger is excited to get stuck into the Top 14 and Heineken Cup after touching down in France.

The 27-year-old arrives after playing for the All Blacks against his newly adopted country in the June Test series, before passing on a chance to play in The Rugby Championship in order to prepare for his move abroad.

Ranger landed on the same day as Cheetahs back Robert Ebersohn to bolster Montpellier's midfield options, which already include Wynand Olivier and Anthony Tuitavake.

"I'm both excited and nervous to start this new adventure," Ranger told the ERC website after arriving on Monday.

"I will have to learn about a new culture and a new way of playing rugby but I'm arriving here with a very open mind. I'm ready to meet new people and experience a new way of life and I'm very excited about that.

"I loved playing in New Zealand but I knew that at some point I would leave to go abroad. This is a good decision for me and my family. I was in advanced contacts with Montpellier for a long time and I know that I will fit into both the city and the club."

Having followed Montpellier's progress whilst preparing to move from New Zealand, Ranger has kept track of his new side's fortunes so far this season.

Fabien Galthie's men currently are second in the Top 14, level on points with leaders Toulon, but sit third in their Heineken Cup pool after two matches behind Leicester and Ulster.

"I know that Montpellier are an ambitious club who want to win titles and produce an attacking game through their backline. That's something I will really enjoy," added Ranger.

"I watched all their games that I could back home on TV and, if that wasn't possible, I looked up all the information on specialised websites.

"Everything seems to be going pretty well for them at the moment [in the Top 14] even if the team seemed a bit disappointed with the last few games."
