Uncertain: Steffon Armitage

Toulon flanker Steffon Armitage admits that he does not know whether he will stay at the club next season.

The former England openside is out of contract at the end of this season, having already spent two successful years in France.

Armitage joined from London Irish in 2011 and was named the best foreign player in the Top 14 after his debut season, when Toulon reached the Top 14 Final.

He followed it up by tasting Heineken Cup success last season, playing alongside his brother, full-back Delon.

With speculation linking British and Irish Lions captain Sam Warburton with the club and the already rich stock of back-rowers at Toulon including Juan Smith, Danie Roussouw, Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe and Joe Van Niekerk, Armitage admits enjoying the competition but refused to confirm whether he would still be in France next season.

"I don't know ... There's a lot to think about," Armitage told the Telegraph.

"I'm not really focused on that yet, I'm just trying to play my best and see what happens after that.

"If it is true that he [Warburton] is coming, then obviously I will welcome him here and make sure I give him a good go to see who gets that number seven shirt. That was one of the reasons I came to Toulon - for competition for places.

"I think he is a great player, but on a rugby field you have to think you are the best. He is just a player with number seven on his back, the same as me. He's captained the Lions and I've got lots of respect for him, but at the end of the day he is just a normal person."

Armitage also revealed he still held ambitions to play for England again in the future and to add to his five caps.

"I'll never give up on England," added Armitage.

"I'll do whatever it takes to represent England, but if I decide it is the best option for me to stay here to improve player-wise then I'll do that."
