Clermont centre Aurélien Rougerie will miss the start of the Top 14 season due to a foot injury that needs five weeks to heal.
The veteran French international has not been short of injuries since the beginning of his career and is set to miss Clermont's entire pre-season program.
His long absence will therefore rule the 32-year-old out of Clermont's friendly games against Perpignan, Oyonnax and Wasps and their Top 14 opener in Biarritz.
He will undergo surgery soon with the hope of solving the injury sustained in last season's semi-final against Castres.
The iconic Clermont stalwart Rougerie told coach Vern Cotter after the same semi-final that he does not want to be captain again because he was tired of continuously losing finals.
24-year-old scrum-half Morgan Parra will captain les Jaurnards in the upcoming season.
