Try for Toulon: Matt Giteau leaves Rory Kockott for dead
Toulon extended their unbeaten start to the Top 14 season to six games on Saturday with a comfortable 33-12 win over Castres at Stade Felix Mayol.
The hosts outscored Castres three tries to none to secure a bonus point and top spot in the standings for at least another week.
The result also means that Toulon equal the record set by Stade Français for consecutive wins at the start of a season.
Jonny Wilkinson kicked 18 points including a drop-goal with another faultless kicking display.
Matt Giteau got the ball rolling for Toulon - who led 17-12 at half time - intercepting and sprinting 40 metres for the opening try after Wilkinson had landed an early penalty.
The visitors got themselves off the mark shortly before the 20 minute mark through a superb long-range penalty by South African scrum-half Rory Kockott after France centre Maxime Mermoz went offside.
They reduced the gap further soon after when Toulon's English full-back Delon Armitage was penalised for a high tackle and Kockott made no mistake while the referee gave the Toulon players a lecture about their high penalty count.
Fred Michalak - who started at scrum-half for the first time inside Wilkinson - was the star of the show and left the field to a standing ovation in the closing minutes having set up hooker Jean-Charles Orioli for RCT's second try just before the interval.
Michalak slipped a pass to Orioli 22 metres out and he broke three tackles to touch down. Wilkinson added the conversion to make it 17-6.
Castres, though, wouldn't give up and two more penalties by Kockott kept them in touch. The South African ruined his perfect record however as a penalty - again the fault of Armitage - hit the post.
Wilkinson made it 20-12 early in the second-half as he dropped a goal in front of the posts after being set up by Michalak and stretched the lead further in the 53rd minute with a penalty.
Five minutes later the Englishman added another penalty to leave Castres requiring two converted tries to get their noses in front.
However, it was Toulon who got a try as Wilkinson fed Mermoz who passed to David Smith and he broke through the Castres centres to touch down under the posts seven minutes from full-time.
Wilkinson converted and the home defence held on to shut Castres out and secure the try bonus-point.

hear hear melkdave!! that perfectly sums up the problem for any french club currently trying to compete on two fronts. it's just impossible to compete with fresh celtic teams. not because they're better. just much less knackered. NZ and McCaw is a good example of how important player welfare is. we're not saying players shouldn't be managed. we're saying they should. Pro12 is the blueprint to copy. T14 needs to change (but i fear it won't)

Hard to see Toulon not challanging for HEC honours ,provided they can concentrate on it,Hard to do in the T14,where so many teams are packed with class players, and any team can beat any other..This is the big differace between the Pro12 and T14/ AP clubs Where Pro12 clubs can go for european glory ,and not worry about the league at all.

"Agree. possible champions of both... Provided they rotate players. Is Wilko creative enough at 10 at top level still?"
No problem, they have Freddie who is, with Q.Cooper, the most creative 10 in the world.

@Pierredelot1: Michalak's best position is at 10 and that's not even close actually.
His best displays both at club and international level have been at 10.
Look at the results France(1 GS, 1 6N + multiple wins against Australia and SA), Toulouse(2 HCUPs) and the Sharks (1 Currie Cup+ 1 Super 15 final) got when Freddie played at 10.
Not to mention that he was far better at 10 with Toulon last week than at 9 against Castres this week.

mighty team. if they stay injury-free, and laporte gets them playing for each other, there's no looking past them. as others have said, if they get on a run in T14, and can "focus" on hcup games, even just a little, the celtic teams will be simply smashed all over the park. and that includes leinster i'm afraid. even if they are the best team in the NH (club or int'l) hehehe.....

Ha ha, Freddie at No 9, where he really shines. It may not be his preferred position but it is certainly his best. Giteau has played well since his arrival and is certainly a class act, it allows Wilkinson many more options to have someone of his skill set at second five eights. I think by Xmas they could be well clear in the Top 14 at this rate allowing them to rest players more for the H Cup where they should begin to show their mettle. Don't get too cocky you Leinster boys, unless you bring in more youth of quality over the next 12 months your dominance will be over.

When Andrew Sheridan was selected for England, the talk was he will take on Carl Hayman the best prop around at the time.
He came he saw but he did not conquer :)
Now they play on the same front row team !!!

@quietbrit you're right, with the skill and experience in their backline and the sheer power of some of the forwards (like armitage) as well as the blend of being able to interchange wilkinson and giteau at 10 for different plays means that Toulon definitely look like potential champs of not only the top 14 but also europe...
