Phil Greening: Paid 40,000 euros to France centre Aurélien Rougerie

Former England hooker Phil Greening has settled a claim from France centre Aurélien Rougerie over an injury he sustained almost ten years ago.

The 31-year-old Clermont skipper had three operations to repair his windpipe after suffering the injury while playing for his club - at the time known as Montferrand - against Greening's Wasps in a friendly match in August 2002.

71-cap Rougerie finally returned to French top-flight rugby in December of the same year.

Greening was ordered to pay 40,000 euros to Rougerie in November 2007, and the France centre received a cheque for that amount on Thursday, Rougerie's lawyers Gilles-Jean Portejoie and Charles Fribourg revealed.

Greening and Wasps also settled with the local Puy-de-Dome healthcare for 26,000 euros.

@JeanLucGouger I found it...for what it is worth...minute 28:17. All it shows is harinordoquy's hands on Woodcock's face (not eye gouging, which would have been incredibly stupid even for Harinordoquy given it is out in the open for all to see) ....nothing of Read. Have you heard of Photoshop in rural France?

Oh, and by the way, I quite enjoyed the review of the final. It confirmed my observation that France playing the best rugby they have ever played are not good enough to beat NZ on their worst day in years. One day French rugby will eventually come of age and you will win a more important tournament than your relatively easy 6N regional championship. By then you may well have learned enough about the game to appreciate brilliant reffing too. Perhaps not though....it is a very English game.

@JeanLucJoinel ..that's all you have? One still photo that shows nothing? Can you provide the video evidence? Just the minute that this happened ...or do you expect me to watch an entire 80 minutes of your pathetic humiliation just to find that it doesn't exist? And lastly, you say "racial slurs against french rugby and france..." Do you really consider yourself and all French people a different race? Or are you just playing the race card because you have nothing legitimate to say? Still post the minute of the "kieran reads fingers in harinordoquys eyes" offense so we can review it. Then I will grovel. In the meantime, I will try to keep my new year's resolution not to generalise and not to tell you what I think of you because then reasonable, decent Frenchmen like RosBif may be offended...(but I think you know what I think and what most decent people think of your support of eye gouging)

here's a photo for you "Justice" from one of those 'biased media' sources you whinge about:

http://www.odt.co.nz/sport/rugby/192341/rugby-their-biggest-day-year

go back to the tape for the footage of the maul in question. read moves his hand back and forth over harinordoquys face, while haridnordoquy has his fingers in woodcocks eyes.

accidental and blameless -whereas rougerie was 'deliberately' trying to blind the best rugby player in the world?

on the basis of your previous gibberings read and harinordoquy should have been cited, right? or just harinordoquy perhaps because he's made the error of not wearing a black shirt , non?

but then your previous gibberings include such gems as your truly comical interpretation of the rules about high tackles, and your observation that Jouberts refereeing of the final was exemplary and he made only one mistaken call in the entire match....so your self appointed status as an arbiter of whats right and wrong in rugby doesn't have much- well, lets be frank any, actually- credibility.

double standards and hypocrisy.

cue 'filthy french...blah...jouberts amazing..blah....gibber...blah..drool...gibber.'

the point is that apologists for the all blacks sorry performance in the final have pored over the tapes and found the 'evidence' of rougerie's capital offence- including headbutts and no doubt attempted genocide on the population of new zealand. much of it a rather transparent rearguard action by silly little people (i'm thinking of people like you really here) who in advance of the final wrote france off completely and also levelled some feeble minded racial slurs against french rugby and france in general.

@justice. welcome back buddy! was beginning to get withdrawal symptoms hehehe. i read your posts on the new SA coach with interest. was gonna say hi on that string but the blog was pretty crowded. Plus, my wife has told me i need to get a life, so i've been trying to lay off the web since RWC (although there's been too much good rugby in HCup to completely stay away)....

@JLJ and bambo. ditto. was wanting to say hi earlier. had begun to think we might all have got red cards either from Ed, or the wife, or others in our lives!! looking fwd to further chat during the 6N and Super campaign. keep the faith. it's still the best sport in the world, and the best group of fans :-)

justice_4_all says...

@JLJ, please provide a reference for this "kieran reads fingers in harinordoquys eyes." RWC2011 final? Minute? Youtube or other URL reference if its not in the the standard TV broadcasts. I'd be VERY interested to see this evidence if it exists. I'll reserve my right to retaliatory insult in the hope that you can actually produce the evidence....in which case I will grovel and be outraged

@Rosbif, agree that contrition is needed

@bambo, I enjoyed your post. Enjoy the Mexican wave. Glad it was only a yellow you got from the Ed,...I was beginning to think it might have been a red.

'support of eye gouging'...do grow up Justice. the evidence is simply not as clearcut.

no more clearcut than mccaw's knee to parra

and less clearcut than kieran reads fingers in harinordoquys eyes. where's your 'outrage' about that?

its hypocritical nonsense.

Posted 08:50 03rd February 2012

Rosbif says...

@bambo. nicely put. i too wish it would become a non-story, but people still waiting for some sign of contrition methinks (if not for official sanction, then at least for a sense of "sanction in the court of public opinion"). then time will do the rest, hopefully :-)

The non-story that would not die; the un-cited eye contact by Rougerie on McCaw as evidenced by some pretty ropey video and even more ropey commentary from some NZ pundits.

McCaw himself has moved on from the story whilst here it bats back and forth with the same old 'names' (mine included!) facing off.

There is no parallel to be made between this and the genuine un-contestable damage done to Rougerie.

Both are fine players. Rougerie has an excellent record. So, like McCaw why not move on? I'm sure that McCaw and Rougerie don't need this non-story being debated every time either name crops up. I know that rugby doesn't need it.

I'm looking forward to the 6N. I might even do a wee Mexican wave with the kids when I'm at Murrayfield cheering on both teams.

Perhaps to shed some light on how there can be such apparent differences in opinion on Rougerie.

PSA's view (roughly translated): "when you see how the players behave on and off the field, you understand how important Rougerie is to the group. He is the go-to guy, his presence is re-assuring for the others, he is the daddy of the backline...." (bear in mind, PSA was born in the Drome and grew up playing at Montferrand)

Tony Marsh has spoken in the past about how influential a figure Rougerie is. He played alongside Rougerie for years, but is hardly unaware of McCaw's existence. He was a Super rugby winner with Canterbury in 98 while McCaw was playing in that famous Otago vs Rotorua final at Christchurch.

Rougerie's mum and dad are both france internationals. In short, he is a local legend.

Could this be why he did what he did? As moral leader of the team, with everyone looking up to him, did he feel compelled to act on behalf of his team-mates, in the face of what he saw as injustice? In the heat of battle? Remember it was on 78 mins, after he had just taken the ball up smashing through Conrad Smith, Nonu and SBW (not many people do that in a career, let alone in one charge). His lungs must have been bursting. He saw McCaw come in clearly from the side. Under the refs nose. Causing a knock-on by Doussain, a baby on his first cap, who had just entered the field....

This is not a defence. No-one should ever target a players eyes. Never. But perhaps it helps others outside France to understand why a lot of French supporters are ambivalent about it. I don't think anyone can seriously argue that he didn't target McCaw's eyes. That's not the argument. He did. Clearly. On purpose. But not in a "I'm going to blind you" kind of way. The harder question to answer is why? People ask "what kind of man does this?" Rougerie doesn't fit the mould

@JeanLucJoinel. Watched the video again, Rougerie clearly plucks at RMcC's eyes. I wonder why you chose the name JeanLucJoinel who was by some accounts a clean and fine rugby player. You clearly are not JLJ himself, nor anything like him with your continued support of the eye gouging Gougerie.

and of course there's equally 'conclusive' footage of kieran read 'gouging' harinordoquy in the final while harinordoquy simulataenously 'gouges' woodcock.

disgraceful, disgusting, filthy...blah...blah...yawn

untwist your little panties APV . its an alleged offence. watch the footage again. no more clearcut than the alleged knee to the head on Parra which McCaw got away with.

and the point , regarding this thread is that the physical damage caused by greening was rather more substantial than the damage (none) to McCaw.

bye bye.

@ Rosbif... nah, poor time-zone management on my part plus I reckon the bloke who drew the overnight shift at PR snuck off down the pub, showed up late & had a bit of a kip. Or read the latest contribution from one of the bok boys (BVD/ leebok/ darthbok/ sjambok etc) & went catatonic for a bit... can't blame him either way, really.

I've got my money on France for the 6N btw, Wales are still more sizzle than steak, ditto Ireland, & England & Scotland are still, sadly, England & Scotland :-)

@ JeanLucJoinel - "alleged"? Really? You want to go there?! He did it. He got away with it. From now on, in my mind, he's a disgraceful, filthy, disgusting and dirty player. End of story.

@ isthatrightref ...your post was so good, you sent it twice...!! 100% agree with you as ever...

another curious rumour doing the rounds. it has been suggested Wasps only settled the claim because they are preparing the club for a possible sale and needed to tidy up any outstanding litigation. who knows? if so, it is a somewhat different story than "Greening finally decides to settle". hmmmm, just in case anyone thought rugby wasn't all about business.....

@ Rosbif... absolutely right on every count. Wouldn't wish the injury Rougerie suffered on anyone but as per my post (thought v.1 must've got lost in transit hence v.2 being so similar, sorry for that) would expect someone who'd been on the receiving end of filth to either refrain from dishing it out or at least apologise afterwards.
