Raring to go: Mike Phillips

Wales scrum-half Mike Phillips is relishing the prospect of facing the Springboks in their own backyard later this month.

Phillips impressed during the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa in 2009. He's set to return with Wales and emphasised how much he enjoys playing against the Springboks who are renowned for their physicality.

"I love playing against South Africa, I've played them a few times now and it's always physical and direct," he told Walesonline

"I think I've done alright against them as well.

"It's a great place to go and play rugby, hopefully it can be a good time for us and we can do well.

"We've got a great squad here."

Phillips and the rest of coach Warren Gatland's squad are keen to make history as Wales look to secure their first ever win over the Boks on South Africa soil.

"I've lost more than I've won against them (South Africa) but hopefully that will change and I can be part of a historic Welsh team this summer," added the 31-year-old.

"That's what all the players want, and that's what we're going to try and do."

Whilst he is optimistic, Phillips knows that a massive task awaits Wales against the two-time world champions.

"Wales have never won there, obviously it's a very difficult place to go and play even teams like Australia and New Zealand find it tricky to go there," he said.

"But that's the challenge for us, it's a great opportunity to go down and test ourselves against the best and that's what you want as international players.

"We're building nicely for the world cup year, we've got to be confident in our group, prepare really well and who knows what can happen."
