Confident: Sir Ian McGeechan

Former Scotland player and head coach Sir Ian McGeechan is confident his former side can defeat France next week at Murrayfield.

Scotland take on les Bleus off the back of a morale-boosting 21-20 victory over Italy in Rome on Saturday, while Philippe Saint-Andre's men fell to their first defeat of the Six Nations at the hands of Wales.

France will be without Louis Picamoles, Wesley Fofana and Yannick Nyanga through either injury or suspension, and scrum-half Morgan Parra faces a disciplinary hearing after headbutting an opponent during a Top 14 game this weekend.

McGeechan, however, was impressed by the play Scotland showed in patches against the Azzurri with the performances of Glasgow Warriors duo Alex Dunbar - who bagged a brace of tries - and Duncan Weir - whose booming last minute drop-goal decided the game - especially pleasing.

"It would have been a travesty if Scotland had not won that game," McGeechan told the Glasgow Evening Times.

"Now we have, it is vital we build on the victory over Italy with another positive result and performance against the French.

"So we have given ourselves a real platform into the France game and a much-needed confidence boost. The French will not fancy coming to Murrayfield in the aftermath of a pretty damaging performance and result for them in Cardiff.

"I also think they won't enjoy the surface at Murrayfield, which is not ideal for their type of running game. So that will be a leveller and most definitely Scotland have a real chance.

"With regard to Duncan Weir, I thought he sat back in the pocket and really positioned himself well for the winning drop-goal.

"He also showed great composure, which in turn allowed him to produce the best possible strike on the ball. But I also liked the way he really talked to his pack the whole way through and you can see he is growing into the role of Scotland stand-off.

"As for Alex Dunbar, he took a great line for his first try and I thought he showed the physicality you need at centre on the international stage. Now both lads and the rest of the Scotland squad have given themselves a real chance to kick-on against France."
