All Black coach Steve Hansen L and captain Richie McCaw pose with the Team of the Year award

New Zealand's best: Steve Hansen and Richie McCaw

All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw has been named the Kelvin R Tremain Memorial Player of the Year in New Zealand's annual rugby awards.

The ceremony also saw accolades for All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen, and the world champion All Blacks.

McCaw's consistently outstanding performance, relentless workrate and inspiring leadership on and off the field, have seen him take the title for the fourth time in the 18-year history of the award. McCaw, 31, was also named the Kelvin Tremain Memorial Player of the Year in 2003, 2006 and 2009.

In a year in which he anointed several new All Blacks and led a convincing international campaign, head coach Hansen picked up his first Coach of the Year Award, seeing out challenges from Chiefs Coach Dave Rennie and All Blacks Sevens maestro Gordon Tietjens.

The All Blacks' continued dominance through the international season which saw them take a clean sweep of the June Tests, retain the Bledisloe Cup and win the Rugby Championship and a three from four record on the End of Year Tour resulted in them winning the Team of the Year award. They edged out Super Rugby Champions, the Chiefs and five-in-a-row ITM Cup winners, Canterbury.

Auckland loose forward Rawinia Everitt has been rewarded for a solid season both in the Women's Provincial Championship and in the black jersey with the Black Ferns, as she was named the NZRU Women's Player of the Year.

All Blacks and Chiefs loose forward Liam Messam was named the Tom French Memorial Maori Player of the Year, while Manawatu Turbos and New Zealand U20 emerging talent Jason Emery won the NZRU Age Grade Player of the Year.

This year's IRB Sevens Player of the Year Tomasi Cama has added the NZRU Sevens Player of the Year to his bow, while professional-player-turned-professional-referee Glen Jackson was named the NZRU Referee of the Year.

An inspiring season from Hurricanes captain and centre Conrad Smith saw him pick up the Super Rugby Player of the Year award, while Canterbury's Robbie Fruean picked up the ITM Cup Player of the Year award for the second time, having won it in 2010. Wanganui's Peter Rowe was named the Heartland Player of the Year.

Special presentations of greenstone mere were made to All Blacks Sevens captain DJ Forbes, and All Blacks Sevens veterans Lote Raikabula and Sevens Player of the Year Tomasi Cama, to mark 50 tournaments each. A mere was also presented to All Blacks assistant manager Gilbert Enoka in recognition of his assisting the team in 150 Tests.

@ APV1... I'm rather fond of déclassé as hardly anyone will know what you mean.

Happy Christmas :-)

@ carpelone - not enough. isthatrightref's correct, I need a new word. I had hoped the addition of "chump" would do the trick, but even that didn't really work.

I'll think of one by 2013 and start the New Year in a rather mediocre fashion!

;-)

He may well have won the award but what about Brendan Cole from strictly ??? The epitome of professionalism and grace why was he not considered, after all he is a Kiwi.

That said McCaw was the deserving choice but seriously guys you've got to tach him how to dress !!! I know in these modern days black tie does not mean a bow tie but look at the photo the guy needs to learn how to tie a knot. Mind you Hansen could do with getting a shirt that fits.

Now before you NZ rabids get going this is only a slight observation I can think of no finer player or person to give the award to apart from perhaps from Rob " Teflon " Andrews the greasy spoon of the RFU

Any other year & Read would've won this hands down but this has been Richies year, to the point where it's almost like there's 2 Richies out there: the ball-carrying, ruck-clearing, 'A' defender Richie & the tackler/ snaffler, continuity Richie & as someone else noted he seems able to tell 2 or 3 phases in advance which Richie will be required & where... plus scores extra points in my book for driving the opposition players, supporters & media purple with outrage & green with envy at the same time.

@ APV1... I think you need a new word, you're not getting as many bites as you used to :-)

However, im still really angry that Owen Farrel didn't get nominated for the NZ POTY awards!!! How could NZ leave out England's best-potential-non-starting-player this year!!?? What a JOKE this award is!!!

THE RIGHT DECISION!!!

And should've won IRB too! A spades a spade people! He's been consistently awesome all year round!

McCaw was the top tackler in just about all the AB games this years. He carries the ball strongly as well and gets more ground than it looks like he should. He'll be back hungrier than ever.

curlymac says...

when was the last time macaw got any turnovers by himself, like he used too?

I saw non the year despite watching all of his games, he is a legend but to old and the all blacks really miss those turnovers.

he might find it hard to get back in the team after his holiday.

Fruean; can't believe he's not been an AB this year. And hats off the Crusaders in general for what they've got through in the last couple of years following the quake. I think the AB WC honeymoon is now over. Lots of awards for old timers whilst the young talent spends its prime at club level missing out. Reminds me of the grand old men in 2003... Dads army as the Antipodes called them.

Richie McCaw has a certain Je ne sais quoi, he is the bollocks, he's choice bro sweet as, he's special, he's da man, timeless... And very much deserves the award.

APV1: what? Your post makes no sense - you do realize that this is a

New Zealand award? And "mediocre chump" - really?
