New Zealand hooker Andrew Hore has been given a five-week suspension for striking Wales lock Bradley Davies last Saturday in Cardiff.
Hore was originally handed an eight-week suspension but had three weeks knocked off for his exemplary disciplinary record, good conduct at the hearing and genuine remorse over the incident.
Davies was forced to leave the field and sent to hospital following the blindside shot, with both fans and the media widely condemning Hore for his actions.
The ban means Hore will be unable to play again until 24 February 2013, meaning he will miss this weekend's Test against England at Twickenham along with all of the Highlanders pre-season matches and the first clash of the new Super Rugby season.
"I want to say how bad I feel and how embarrassed I am to be in this situation," Hore told the New Zealand Herald.
"It is not the All Black way and I have let myself down and the team and probably the whole country is pretty proud of what we do.
"I hope Bradley Davies does recover and get back up and running and play in the Heineken Cup as soon as he can.
"I have been on the phone and talked to him on Sunday about the incident and obviously the All Black management and the leader group that I am a part of has been pretty stern on me for getting us into this situation and I have to take what I have got and go back and start building a reputation as a good, clean, hard footy player and hopefully I can do that in the next Super Rugby competition when I get back playing."

When something like this happens, I hope they throw the book at them.
Of course, in this incident, it was neither deliberate, nor a punch.
Hore has apologised, been in constant contact with Davies (funny how none of the Welsh hysterics mentioned this fact) and is remorseful.
5 weeks is about right, a bit on the harsh side in fact.

5 weeks seems about right, but just two competitive games ? Maybe another game or two would have been fairer.
The again Greyling 2 week one game miss for a fair fair worse act - could be grounds for appealing the sentence from Hore!.

Ban should be in games not weeks. In this case four game ban or eight(ish) week ban would be equivalent and fair.

Hore was wrong - guilty disgraceful.
Davies was running interference - consciously - one can see him adjusting his angle of running to continue blocking Hore. No excuse but get your facts right.

What beats me is why hore wasnt sent to a civil court tried found guilty and sentenced to be hanged by the neck until dead. Your really wonder about the mentality of some people with their comments on here. As usual the All Black haters those who enjoy watching mediocre rugby love to come out and blame one players stupidity on the whole team. The team is not a dirty team and the comments of Hore show that his own team mates have been hard on him.
As I have said before I do not condone what he did and he has been cited found guilty and punished accordingly. As usual there are those who feel the punishment should be greater and this happens in wider society where some even want to bring back the death penalty for serious crimes but the law doesnt allow that and quite often even gives lighter sentences after hearing all the facts than what some want. The situation has been dealt with the facts heard and the punishment given. Now as many say it is time to move on. Hore has received his due punishement for his stupidity.
@APV1 I dont know about Meleamu we will have toi see who is named in the team.However if he cant play have no fear Coles is a very good player and I named hiom before the tour as being a worthy replacement when TV Addict asked about up and coming hookers who were younger than our two incumbants. Also in Hika Elliott the Maori hooker and former All Black we also have an able replacement. Both Coles and Elliott , I believe, are about the same age.
@ 7redcards it is obvious from your posts and your comments previously that no decision that was given to Hore would have been acceptable to you, probably not even a public hanging.

As a kiwi I am both disappointed in Hore's actiones but pleased be got heavily punished - hopefully now the conspiracy theorists will shut up!
I agree that bans should be in matches, not weeks. It also makes sense to me that they would not necessarily be consecutive matches in that the punishment could be for example "the next 3 regular season domestic games and the next 2 internationals" - that way they could be truly comparible and fair

Finally the judiciary has got a suspension right! 5 weeks for this cowardly and dangerous act is spot on and well deserved for Hore. And it was handled extremely poorly by the All Blacks coaches and players before the hearing. What an embarrassment.
However, when you compare it against Simmons' spear tackle, Higginbotham's knee and headbutt on McCaw, and Greyling's diving forearm on McCaw (by far the worst of the lot) then it makes a mockery of the IRB judiciary system.
This just gives us further proof that the IRB is a complete joke.

@Mayce - I didn't see the Timani incident so will take your word for it being a straight punch. Hore's wasn't, it was a premeditated, blind sided hit on a player unable to defend himself. It's shameful and I am sure Hore will look back on this episode and feel quite rightly that he let himself down very very badly. Also you may be right, I may have the blinkers on but its hard to see this incident get treated so lightly when our players get such a rough ride during SH tours. (Well in my view!)

Right, the perception in the NH, rightly or wrongly, is that our (NH players) get the rough end of the stick in front of SH disciplinary committees, whilst SH players get off incredibly lightly. I am not advocating one set of players getting more than others, just that the playing field should be level, to me it does not appear so. Conspiracy theory? I would say no, its a fact.
You cite Hartley and Johnson for their foul play and the leniency of their bans, did either of these incidents result in unconsciousness, hospitalisation, concussion, memory loss? Not as far as I remember? (no pun intended).
If I sound vindictive I apologise, its just that acts of cowardice wind me up, if you have to do some pest control during a game, stand up and do it like a man, to his face, not like some cheap football thug, from behind and then scarper!

@HurricaneRats Thank you for your post. I was not too sure what the report meant. If he had been banned for 5 weeks from the 30th Nov 2012 then he would have been able to play on the 4th Jan 2013 which would have been wrong.
To those who keep on carping about incidents which happened over a year ago, please stop. I am from Southern Africa (English parents) and I now support England. Please would all of you note my original comment about the report.

Hard to compare offences & sanctions but 5 weeks seems about right given what Simmons has ended up with.
As long as IRB sub-lets there judicial process to SANZAR & 6N there'll never be consistency... but even in sports that have the same panel adjudicating on foul play every week there are always quibbles that player A got less than player B on account of which club they play for, whether they also play at a higher level etc etc

The grin on his face definitely either shows a lack of remorse or the fact that he knows he's lucky to get only 5 weeks... because we know for an absolute fact that this photo was taken immediately upon leaving the hearing and some journo probably quipped "How do you feel about the 5 weeks, Andrew?", right?
