Upset win: Argentina celebrate

Argentina caused the first upset of the November internationals after beating Wales 26-12 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday.

When Wales had possession they were guilty of forcing passes, and their high error-count merely played into Argentina's hands. The only positive note for a disjointed home team was that they were in front approaching the last quarter of the match.

But that's as good as it got for the hosts, before the Pumas scored two quickfire tries through wingers Juan Imhoff and Gonzalo Camacho to open up a sizeable lead which they never relinquished.

It was only the second win for Argentina in Cardiff and their first since 2001, whilst Wales were dealt a woeful fourth defeat on the trot.

Argentina dominated the opening exchanges and were on the scoreboard first through the boot of their evergreen centre Felipe Contepomi, but Wales were quick to level proceedings thanks to a Leigh Halfpenny penalty.

A drop-goal from Pumas pivot Nicolas Sanchez a few minutes later put his team back in front, however disaster then struck for the South Americans when Contepomi was stretchered off the field after taking a knock to the knee.

As soon as the 35-year-old was off the pitch, Halfpenny rubbed further salt into the Pumas' wounds with his second penalty of the match to draw the scores level (6-6) once again in the thirteenth minute.

The Pumas continued to dominate for long periods in the first half and should have had more than six points for their efforts. They came close to scoring the first try, only for Gonzalo Tiesi to spill a cross-field grubber from Gonzalo Camacho forward with the tryline begging.

In what was an unspectacular first half thus far, Wales suffered a setback of their own when Jamie Roberts was forced off the pitch in the 24th minute after clashing heads with Tiesi - both sides now without their first-choice inside centres.

But it wasn't all doom and gloom for Wales as the hosts took the lead three minutes later for the first time in the match courtesy of another Halfpenny penalty (9-6). However on the stroke of half-time, Alun Wyn Jones was the next Wales casuality after the lock left the field clutching his wrist.

The second half proved more eventful, as Argentina once again got out of their starting blocks first only for Sanchez to miss two early shots at goal - six points down the toilet. Halfpenny then showed the Pumas goal-kicker how it was done after nailing his fourth successive penalty to extend Wales' lead (12-6).

But while Sanchez failed from the tee, he was on target with another drop-goal to close the gap to three points and keep the pressure on the Grand Slam winners.

For 55 minutes, Wales were still in the game. But that was all about to change when Argentina produced two well-timed scores.

Their forwards initially made the hard yards, with number eight Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe delivering a scoring pass to Imhoff,, who galloped over from 20 metres out.

And before Wales could recover, Camacho found himself on the end of a Juan Martin Hernandez pass as the Pumas posted a second try in the space of four minutes - both were converted by Sanchez, who would go on to seal the deal with a late penalty.

Man of the match: For Wales, their front row deserves a pat on the back for matching the Pumas at scrum-time. And of course, Leigh Halfpenny did well from the tee. For Argentina - take your pick! From 1-15, everyone put their body on the line from start to finish. But if we have to single out one player, it has to be captain and number eight Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe who once again led from the front superbly - surely a front-runner for an IRB Player of the Year nomination.

Moment of the match: Juan Imhoff's try gave the Pumas a shout at victory, but Gonzalo Camacho's effort simply confirmed it.

Villain of the match: No malice to report.

I'm now no longer English. I'm Argentinian. You absolute beauties Los Pumas! :') maybe this will finally make them begin to realise...all they acheived to be the 'best welsh side in 20 years' was scrape past a weak Ireland, a tired Samoa and get knocked out by a below-par France then scrape a six nations grandslam over England by a matter of inches when England's, Scotland's and France's squads were practically their respective 'A' teams and then go on to lose 3 tests against the worst Australia side in 10 years and then now lose to an uncreative if not otherwise very good Argentina side. It's funny how things look in a different light isn't it Wales?

All this Wales bashing is fun.

Can the 5th best southern hemisphere team beat the "best" northern hemisphere team ??

Talk yourselves up Wales but Samoa is going to beat you by 15 points.

Why are people thinking Wales are the best in europe??Yes they won the 6Ns with a slam earlier this year, but lets not forget ,it was after a RWC,and they had some luck.Thinking Wales are the best in the NH ,is like thinking Australia are the best in the SH ,because they won the 3Ns championship before the RWC or curent RC Titles ect are nice ,but they mean nothing in the long run .As the saying goes you are only as good as your last game.Going by that Wales are no way near the best in the NH by a big margin .So please stop pretending being the current 6Ns champions means anything ,IT DOESNT.

They were both pretty poor in my book, but Wales were diabolical. The worst Welsh team I have seen in at least 3 years. Very disappointed, but not that surprised.

Wales were shocking. Why can't they play well when Howley is in charge. Very one dimensional, no go forward from anyone, nobody seemed interested. This will be a wake up call. Preistland needs a break, Roberts and Williams are too similar, Warburton looks knackered. Hookor Biggar to start, Tips at 7. The front row held there own and should start. Knoyle to be given another start. Well done the Argies, well played, from a disappointed Welshman.

Love the posts that Wales are overrated after 1 game. Makes me chuckle.

I think proof that if north and Roberts don't go forward neither do Wales.

A rubbish performance poor selection and dreadfull error rate , Wales will most likely loss all 4 games .....

Professional rugby players must perform better than this

And fiinally a comment for 'world wary' I suppose that really you should apply to the IRB to have all the northern unions disbanded and only allow the great southern hemisphere sides play this great game but then the money wouldn't around would it

Upset hahaha!

This was never an upset, wales were predicted to win therefore they were never going to win. The media always talks them up but they could never beat a team that had troubled the 3 best teams consistently all year.

The easiest way for wales to lose is to predict them to win!!

Well done LOS PUMAS!!

Wales will probably beat the pumas in 50 years or so.

I thought wales would grind out a win this by 2 or 3 points, given that argentina would be exhausted from their 1st championship, and that argentina would come away from the november internationals empty-handed too.

argentina's inside passing was remarkable!

As for wales their players didn't look tired at all, great fitness levels. Not much good if you have no strategy though; they kept floating the ball out to their powerful wingers whom argentina shut down by tackling and holding their feet. Scott Williams threatened with ball in hand.

'Twas so good seeing Argentina playing so well. There are still things to correct, but I enjoyed watching the game. Oh, man! YOU'VE GOT TO LOVE RUGBY!

I knew the Argies were going to win. After some stand up performances, including a draw against the boks, how was a win against Wales an upset?

The other thing that need be mentioned is the Pumas not only scored two brilliant attacking tries, but they didn't let the Welsh cross their line once. This Pumas side is only going to get better and better, and regularly beating the best of Europe and the UK will not be surprising.

I think the Pumas deserve to not be under-estimated anymore.

There will be more upsets, maybe Samoa? The SH Championship will continue to develop Arg rugby as they move towards a 15 man game to add to their scrum and mauling power.

NH rugby is going the way of soccer with club and money dominating over playing for a country - not necessarily their own country either.
