logophile says...

I hope he sticks with the Highlanders. I think he is a good fit there.

Yeah he's 30 so may as well look for some decent cash and let Messam, Vito and the younger boys, Luatua, Shields etc have a crack. Awesome player though.

this is the stupidest thing he can do! he was the second best blindside in the world not a year ago. he is essentially giving up on what he should become. how does he think messam got the number 6 jersey? worked his arse off. dissppointed in thommo to say the least

This guy is a ball carrying cardiovascular freak! I'd put him at 8 so he could get his hands on the ball more often.

he also carried the curse of being seen as a 'utility loose forward', played 6,7,8 and never fixed in any of those positions.

Never quite reached the heights media and fans alike set for him.

Great player, penalty magnet.

Agree with The Carp ! Good player but tended to get penalized a lot for the AB's.

Good Luck, a good player and a nice bloke.

He must be one of the most frustrated players in NZ's history.

When he played openside flanker, he did exactly what McCaw always does, but he got caught every time, like in Durban last year.

He is still able to make a difference in the NH methinks.

I'd love it if he could come to the Ospreys. Not very likely though...

Bit unlucky really as finally Messam has had a run with the full top team and shown how good he is. Thompson has slipped down the pecking order so he may as well set the fishing lines out to see what he can catch.

Kiwikev - 27 tests and started 16 of them. A lot have done worse. but at 30 why not head offshore, as he said not getting younger, after a lifetime of rugby nz schoolboy, u- 19, u-21, a good Super career.

A couple of years overseas - why not?

Good Super Rugby player, who will contribute positively to any team in Europe or Japan.

Craig says...

Agreed kiwikev, though I'd rate him as the best 'loose' blindside in his era. I think he has been utterly brilliant. But, loose seldom cuts it at test match level - the Kaino role is much more sought after and for good reason I guess.

But stunning player, years of amazing service to the Highlanders, deserves a killer contract.

Good luck to him

Kiwikev says...

Good move because he is not going to making the run on side....
