McCaw does not strike me as the type of player or individual to hang around if he is not worthy of his place.

Considering his absence through injury since the world cup I thought he had quite a good test series against Ireland... couple of handling errors, but still had great stats across the three tests. His leadership came to the fore with some of his ball carrying that got the ABs in the position to sneek the victory.

Whether he is there to lead the team in England 2015 only time will tell, but one thing for sure the ABs have got ready made captain in Read and potential openside star in Sam Cane to take them forward.

In all fairness to Cane he is as good as anyone in NZ other than perhaps McCaw and he certainly has age on his side. His performances this year have been very good (at worst), he's been targetted for the top for some time, so realistically he's the next open side for the AB's!

It is early days to be so definitive given the amount of time that (Sir) Richard was injured and the lack of first class footy that he has played since the RWC....

That said, I am looking forward to seeing how he goes against quality opposition in the RC before making a clear statement - one way or another...

@carpelone it's not just about Cane though as I do agree with you. There's Todd to take into the equation also and he has been outstanding throughout the last couple of seasons. I do feel this gives the All Blacks yet more options (damn them) and it's certainly worth considering... no hurry though!

Cane is far from having proven himself as BdP (i.e. the best # 2 in business) He is a promising young player full stop.
