Ref jobs for Peyper and Kaplan

Reds v Sharks: Jonathan Kaplan

SANZAR has announced the match officials for Saturday's Super Rugby qualifiers, with Jaco Peyper and Jonathan Kaplan handed the jobs.

Lyndon Bray, SANZAR Game Manager, said the appointments were made after a full season analysis of each official, which in turn saw referees rewarded with strong performances.

"We are delighted to announce that Jaco and Jonathan will referee the first matches in this season's Super Rugby Finals Series," he said.

Bray said that the final appointments consider three criteria - the overall performance, accuracy of the big calls and the 'right fit for the game'.

"Referees were reviewed against their overall performance, which takes into consideration their consistency over the whole competition, and form at this latter stage of the competition," he added.

To those suggesting we take out Sanza referees for the finals after they have refereed all those games through the season is nonsensical. Goodness gracious they would probably send Clancy down and then listen to the bleats. Surely we should have the best Sanza referees doing these games whether we agree they are the best or not.

A large brickbat to the boorish Brisbane crowd who booed Kaplan as he left the field as it shows poor form by an ignorant crowd who could only see out of their one red eye. However the Queensland press can take the blame for that as they stirred up conspiracy theories by writing articles about the fact that Kaplan was born in Durban and so it follows for hack journalists writing this that he must obviously cheat and favour the Sharks. Shame on you Queensland journalists you really are a pack of hacks. Shame on you Queensland fans your boorish behaviour in booing Kaplan shows poor sportsmanship and a lack of understanding of how a referee needs to control a game.

By the way just to be clear it was the Australian TMO who said there was no clear view that a try had been scored and some of the suggestions by the Foxtel team that the ref and TMO were confused was insulting. From what I heard Goddard say, he was quite clear that there was no clear view of a grounding for a try to be awarded. The one comment by Martin just shows what an ignorant git he is. McKenzie asked straight about moving Genia from half said yes it was the right thing to do as they had practised that.Martin when asked said "I can't accept this."

I beg your pardon Marto? Who is the coach of the team? Please get rid of this git Mrtin he is an embarassment.

One more thing about the TMO, IMO there should only be one question the ref gets to ask: Try or no try.

Asking the TMO: 'give me a reason not to award this try' is stupid because the ref has obviously decided that a try has been scored but has a bit of self doubt or doesn't have the balls to make the call.

Try or no try - simple

TMO in Saders Force game has to be sacked, I knew when he would only show the replay of the first knock on from behind the player he was going to give it ignoring the angle from the side and front showing it knocked on????

The second was the ref's fault are you seriously saying he saw the ball grounded and if yes is he aware it has to be on or over the line???? Straight pen the other way for any self respecting ref!!!

Jackson missed the second of these Munro both - where is the accountability?

I task planet rugby to chase up the TMO and request that super rugby either sacks this idiot or advises that when a team gets the ball into the "Endzone" its a "try down" and 5 automatic points

If I was a journalist i would investigte if there was any money on Saders +14 HT or Dagg to score 1st try as there is human error and there is cheating and this wasn't human error.

If anything the SA refs seem to have been erring against favouring SA teams this season, was my (admittedly biased) impression. Neutral refs would have been best!

Poor refereeing has marred the entire Super Rugby this season. Action needs to b taken against myopic n biased refs. They have been getting away with a lot. Lets see how this guy handles the breakdowns in thhe Crusaders vs Bulls game.

We all know that some calls can go both ways. No for instance if a call like this goes to one of the SA side it will be based merely on the fact that he is from SA...That is why we needed a neutral ref. Shouldn`t of been to hard, because in the game were Reds vs Sharks a ref from NZ could be implemented and the other semi a ref from Aus. That¿s logic

im not worried about biased refs or anything like that that is obviously ignorant as hell because both are decent refs but seriously its like SANZAR enjoy taking the piss. the crap they pull doesnt even surprise me anymore

Two good refs and in one stroke SANZR have taken out all the Saffa conspiracy theorists. Brilliant!

You paranoid bunch : ) ... there have been a few dozen matches this year including non-neutral refs with zero fallout. There won't be any after Saturday either.

Terry_English says...

Neutral refs are the only fair call and once again SANZAR have blundered.

Why don't they use Northern Hemisphere referees? They could use Southern Hemisphere refs in the Heinkein Cup final stages. That way when the International season starts every team has experienced the differening styles of refereeing.

Can you imagine what will happen if the Bulls or Sharks go through on a 50/.50 call. This is madness. Kiwi ref in Brisbane, Aussie ref in Christchurch is the only sensible call.

I agree with Wallaroo that these two are indeed good refs and are not biased at all, but should either or both the SA teams win I can only imagine fall out

tha_mai says...

saffastormer - agree; they could have gone outside the sanzar countries and brought a couple of refs who are doing the test series next month a few weeks early, some acclimatisation for them to local conditions/styles of play before the internationals. Use the sanzar refs as assts and tmos but still in a neutral capacity would ave been a good idea, are there three from Oz at this level?

this is a joke right?

Wallaroo says...

Based on criteria one would have thought that Bryce the dice would have been selected - just kidding.

In all sincerity based on first 2 criteria, no surprises that Saffa refs have been chosen however have to agree with saffastormer that neutral would have been a major prerequisite. Surely this is a major component of the "right fit for the game" criteria.

Ramage your thoughts mate.
