Boks seal quarter-final spot

Heinrich Brüssow springboks v samoa

Sent off: Samoa's Paul Williams

South Africa remained unbeaten in Pool D and move on to the World Cup quarter-finals after beating Samoa 13-5 at North Harbour Stadium on Friday.

Samoa knew going in that it would be a tough ask to make it into the quarter-finals, but no one ever doubted they would fight until the final whistle.

There was a smidge of 'what might have been' attached to the result though for the islanders as had Mahonri Schwalger grounded a score, who knows what might of happened in the final stages. As it was the reigning champions had enough in the tank to stave off their opponents.

The Springboks came out with intent and quickly set about using their star player of the tournament thus far, Danie Rossouw, to make the metres. Nothing came of their foray after Morne Steyn sliced a drop-goal attempt, but the marker was laid that they weren't going to lose the physical.

South Africa tried for the opening points again moments later when Frans Steyn had a 60-metre penalty shot after good breakdown work from Heinrich Brüssow. That struck the crossbar in what turned out to only be delaying the inevitable as the Bok power soon shone through. They attacked down the left via Schalk Burger, who used his backline, which allowed Bryan Habana to cross in the corner. Morne Steyn's conversion made it 7-0 on ten minutes.

Samoa needed to up the ante and subsequently played to their strengths, with carrying from George Stowers and Seilala Mapusua making ground. That passage certainly let the Boks know they were not going to have it all their own way in Albany as slowly but surely Samoa gained momentum, being willed on by their passionate supporters. It was also apparent South Africa were not going to enjoy a similar score of their triumphs in 2007 and 2003.

That was not to say the Boks were struggling to make their presence felt, and with Frans Steyn sending over a 65-metre penalty on 25 minutes, they knew territory was not going to be a problem. That three was promptly doubled by namesake Morne two minutes later too as Samoa were penalised at scrum-time. 13-0 it was with barely half-an-hour played as Samoa's hopes looked to be getting even slimmer. Wales' fate was also almost known.

North Harbour Stadium was treated to a pulsating finish to the half when Kahn Fotuali'i broke down the right wing before handing on to Mapusua, but the ex-Exiles centre's Hail Mary pass failed to find its man, sending the teams in at 13-0 in favour of the Springboks.

It was a bumper 29,734 crowd on Friday that while packed into an open stadium, did not lack in atmosphere with the vocal Bok fans met by the islanders. And the former were soon to be silenced by a mass of noise from those waving blue and red as a lovely dummy and run from Tusi Pisi unlocked the defence. His offload to Mapusua was then recycled for Stowers to crash in. Pisi missed the kick that would have brought them within one score.

South Africa could have blamed that swing in momentum on the fact they had lost duo Habana and Rossouw, who later returned, to injuries minutes earlier. However, that is doing a disservice to Samoa who were turning up the heat on their rivals during the opening 20 minutes of the second stanza. The Boks needed to some fresh legs and Peter de Villiers oblidged, throwing on forwards Gurthrö Steenkamp and Willem Alberts for the last quarter.

It did little disarm the Samoan assault though as they kept on coming, mixing power up front with stepping wider out until Schwalger came within touching distance of the line before fumbling. Was that to be the moment that would haunt his outfit in the morning?

That it proved to be as an ill-tempered finish that saw Paul Williams sent-off for pushing Brüssow in the face and then John Smit shown yellow after a deliberate slap-down, ultimately ended Samoa's 2011. South Africa are now set to face the Wallabies.

Man of the match: Although on the losing side, Tusi Pisi again showed that he had a big future leading Samoa. The fly-half was light on his feet throughout and marshalled well, finding holes on more than one occasion. Mentions too for Bok props Tendai Mtawarira and Jannie du Plessis at scrum-time and also flanker Schalk Burger, who was a genuine nuisance to Maurie Fa'asavalu and George Stowers. David Lemi was also very impressive.

Moment of the match: Had captain Mahonri Schwalger managed to hold onto the ball when reaching out on 66 minutes, maybe the Samoans were on the verge of something historic. But it was not meant to be as even with John Smit going to the sin-bin soon after, South Africa held on to top the Pool and set up a probable last-eight clash with Australia.

Villain of the match: It was played hard but fair until Paul Williams pushed/punched Heinrich Brüssow after being held at a breakdown. Williams will be upset with how he ended the tournament as the frustration got the better of him.

Well done Samoa ! Powerplay's contribution is maybe a bit OTT, but Samoa certainly don't deserve to be called "Tier 2" any more. (I am thankful they didn't up their game to that level against Wales). And South Africa did well just to hang on there. What an epic game, felicitations to everbody, I wish we could be seeing more of Samoa

Quite a comfortable display against a very good samoan side... seemed like South Africa were trying to take it easy, avoiding injuries. Job done, now for Australia

Paul William's red card for pushing Brussow in the face showed a lack of discipline that probably cost his country a place in the quartet finals. The springboks were on the ropes and John Smit yellow card Samoa could of had an exstra player advantage. Going into the last 10 minutes of the match who know's what might of happened. The Springboks tactics of kicking high up and under's was a complete failure. All they did was give away there possession and allow the Samoans to run at the.

I used to have gr8 respect for Samoa and the contest between our 2 nations always used to be legendary but today I lost all respect for Samoa. Off the ball play was shocking. Well done bokke for keeping your discipline.

"fair spirits" how drunk are you? that was the most off the ball foul play i've ever seen. If IRB doesn't take action against Samoa for what they did in this game I have no clue. If 15 players competed for the ball rather than kicking, punching and pushing springboks they should have won easily.

Great match. Manu Samoa should go out with heads up high. They gave us a great game. Manu Samoa has proven why they are the darling of RWCs. So much for the 50 points margin win to the world champion as predicted before the game.

SAPOLU SHOULD NOW BE FORGIVEN BY THE SAMOANS !!!

He constantly broke the Bok's line and defended really well. I have to watch the match again BUT I didn't see the Bok's backline in action. Seems like they were defending all evening. I SALUTE THE BOK'S DEFENSE,,is still one of the best defense in the tournament.

Burger has proven why he is still one of the best flanker in the game apart from a few round the neck stiff arm hooks as always. But overall he gave us a great game.

Ref was not bad at all, he controlled the game as he saw it and he was not bias to anyone at all in my view.

A bit upset with the Boks in the first half for being unnecessarily nervous even they were dominating the set pieces. Credit to the samoans for closing down their big runners.

Bok has to reflect on the game which was a scare, but the Samoans should be proud of their perfomance tonight. They were really giving it to the Boks with their usual flair.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SA TEAM AND FANS FOR THEIR WIN.

wishing you all the best for the rest of the tournament.

Clearly, Owens is trying his damndest to beat Barnes to 'Chump of the Tournament' with some of his decisions today...not that the touch judge (not Wayne Barnes!) helped with his appalling failure to notice Brussow punching Williams in the head twice. No arguments about the punishment meted out to Williams, and he did ask for it a bit by grabbing Brussow's shirt, but rules are rules, as you're all keen to remind England at the moment. ;)

Dream over for another four years eh Samoa maybe if you can manage to stop a few of your players wandering over to the AB`s then you will be in with a better shout when you come to England.

'That it proved to be as an ill-tempered finish that saw Paul Williams sent-off for pushing Brüssow in the face and then John Smit shown yellow after a deliberate slap-down'

From where I was sitting, it looked like Williams struck Brussow in the face with the heel of his palm and that Smit reached for the ball with his palm turned upwards. Any thoughts on why the author chose to report it otherwise?

I still cant fathom out the breakdown decisions and both cards were ridiculous. Tough on Samoa and particularly Williams who is a brilliant 15. The worry is that the Boks havent looked convincing in their 2 games against good opposition.

Disagree with the red card, It was no worse than Brussouw repeatedly striking him in the back of the head. Oh and before anyone says it, your not allowed to retaliate with strikes to the back of the head!

Well played Samoa. I thought they would fade in the 2nd half with the short turn around but they outplayed the Boks big time. Great team, all they have to do is get their discipline under control and they will get a win or two against the big boys. Not impressed with the Boks in the 2nd half, they are going to need to do some serious homework for their next game.

Williams did NOT punch Brussow! He pushed him with his palm after sustaining a flurry of clench-fisted strikes. Then Brussow falls like a sack of spuds. Racist officiating. Did you hear the sarcasm ref Owens used on Samoa Capt Schwalger? "Which part of 'wait' do you not understand?" He would never dream of talking to John Smit like that. Owens has gone done a lot in my estimation.

Fantastic game to watch, Samoa showed a lot of pride and unfortunately they wont be taking their talents to the next stage of the tournament. 2 scores is about the correct spacing of these two teams at the moment and on a bad day Samoa could take them.

Pray that Steyn doesn't get injured Bokke, cause without the threat of points for any infringement within the half I think a lot of teams would push South Africa harder.

Mmmmmm! SA not that impressive but they still won. On the other hand playing Samoa is never easy, just feel they made heavy weather of it. But on this showing the Aussies will be breathing a bit easier.

I think the ref and assistants had a shocker. Thankfully it didn't affect the result, but he was in the way so many times, the red card was never a red and neither was the yellow. Its the only negative in this great world cup.

Cant wait for the rest of it, as I said this is brilliant.

Thought Brussow should have been carded sin binned for provoking Williams by striking at least 7 times with his fists also. Don't think it should have been a red either, seen players binned for worse/.

Nigel Owens is having a poor tournament and hopefully he doesn't get any more important matches

That was not convincing by the boks. Samoa played a mighty game and would have deserved something from this game. that said, The yellow carding of Smit was rediculous and Owens did no have a good game. He missed a few offsides and forward passes. He blew the game apart. At least he stopped it when Hougaard went down and I hope he is OK because we definitely need him as 1st choice scrumhalf. Du Preez was very weak.
