PR Readers Team of the YEar 2012

Made it: Strauss & Fotuali'i

Power to the people! As has become our tradition, we gave you the chance to vote for your Team of Year: Here are the results from the PR faithful.

Only three players kept their place in your side from 2011 and they were New Zealand backline trio Israel Dagg, Conrad Smith and Dan Carter.

Planet Rugby Readers' Team of the Year:

15 Israel Dagg (Crusaders & New Zealand) - With 68% of your votes there was only one winner in our first position as Israel Dagg saw off Leigh Halfpenny for the jersey. Dagg's ability to ghost past the outside shoulder of defenders makes him a rare commodity you obviously appreciate.

14 Bryan Habana (Stormers & South Africa) - Wore 14 in the Rugby Championship and that was the tournament he was at his best in 2012. If rumours are to be believed he could be on his way to Toulon in the near future but for now, the Stormers have a player who mixes hard graft with pace and intelligence. Bryan Habana saw off Cory Jane and JP Pietersen with consummate ease - not bad for a player who missed the entire November international series.

13 Conrad Smith (Hurricanes & New Zealand) - In many people's eyes, Conrad Smith is 2012's top player (we don't argue with such claims). Leading a young and inexperienced Hurricanes side and being his usual faultless self in an All Black jersey, Smith was an easy winner of the 13 slot as he saw off England's Manu Tuilagi with twice as many votes. A true professional who played a big role in developing Beauden Barrett and Julian Savea.

12 Sonny Bill Williams (Chiefs & New Zealand) - He only needed six months. So many pundits were disappointed he left for Japan when he did as Sonny Bill Williams was beginning to grasp the finer points of rugby union, promising continued improvement beyond where he was already at. But, with a Super Rugby championship medal and classy performances in the June Tests, Williams managed to see off Wesley Fofana by ten votes.

11 Julian Savea (Hurricanes & New Zealand) - An outstanding debut season. Julian Savea was joint second in the Super Rugby campaign - just one try behind the co-winners Andre Taylor and Bjorn Basson - but takes our 11 jersey after receiving over half of the votes.

10 Dan Carter (Crusaders & New Zealand) - The man with the highest percentage of votes for a position and also IRB Player of the Year, Dan Carter, has been a cut above the rest this year. While Jonathan Sexton received some support, it was always Carter for your 10 shirt and after his showing in Scotland - one of only nine Tests he played in 2012 - it seems like readers appreciate what he brings. Not bad after an injury stricken 2011 for the maestro.

9 Kahn Fotuali'i (Ospreys & Samoa) - Surprise? Maybe, maybe not. In truth we also had him in our top two contenders at scrum-half. Kahn Fotuali'i was your clear winner though with double the amount of votes of his closest rival Aaron Smith and it is not a shock that several Top 14 clubs across the Channel are apparently vying for his signature. The Osprey has been vital to Samoa this year and will continue to be when World Cup 2015 arrives.

8 Kieran Read (Crusaders & New Zealand) - We imagined it would be a two-horse race for this position but the power of Louis Picamoles was beaten by a good few lengths by Kieran Read. The number eight picked up a handful of man-of-the-match awards wearing black this year while he was exceptional leading the Crusaders when Richie McCaw was out injured. He got 57% of your votes while the Frenchman surprisingly only managed 16%.

7 Richie McCaw (Crusaders & New Zealand) - 65% and with no one coming even close to the All Black means Richie McCaw returns for you after missing out to David Pocock in 2011. McCaw has quietly got the job done for the Crusaders and NZ while others make noise without having achieved anything close to the flank. It says a lot about his commitment that instead of cashing in for six months, he's resting in order to feature at RWC 2015.

6 Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe (Toulon & Argentina) - Put simply, he was phenomenal for the Pumas during their debut Rugby Championship campaign. Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe switched between blindside and number eight this year and that is why he wears 6 for you, seeing off Dan Lydiate and Chris Robshaw with ease. Honestly, we don't remember a week when Lobbe didn't make our Weekly XV in the southern hemisphere tournament.

5 Nathan Sharpe (Western Force & Australia) - He had to make it didn't he? Nathan Sharpe gave it one last slog for his country during the second half of the year - due to the absence of an injured James Horwill - and gave everything to the Wallaby cause. Fully deserving of his second John Eales Medal as he carried and led admirably for both the Force and Australia. Put your feet up Sharpey, you have earned a fruitful retirement.

4 Eben Etzebeth (Stormers & South Africa) - Was your most-voted second-row by a country mile. 62% of you thought the lock who was only 20 until the end of October was the stand-out in 2012 as he mixed power with dynamism at the beginning of what looks like being a long rugby career at the coal face for South Africa. It wasn't just for the Boks that he shone though as performances for Western Province and the Stormers were exceptional.

3 Dan Cole (Leicester & England) - With 41% of the votes, the ever-improving tighthead managed to see off Owen Franks, Nicolas Mas and Census Johnston here for your number three spot. At 25, Dan Cole is still only a youngster in prop years so fortunately for Leicester and England, his best years are likely to be ahead of him. Next year he has the target of being the British & Irish Lions starting tighthead ahead of Wales veteran Adam Jones.

2 Adriaan Strauss (Cheetahs & South Africa) - Bloemfontein has known for a long time how good Adriaan Strauss is and this year the 27-year-old finally had an extended run in the Springbok side. He did not disappoint but only just managed to see off countryman Bismarck du Plessis by 5 votes while Ireland hooker Rory Best was a distant third place. It will be interesting to see who Heyneke Meyer favours when Du Plessis returns in 2013.

1 Sona Taumalolo (Chiefs & Tonga) - Last but not least you guys went for a free-scoring loosehead. Yes, the former Chiefs prop had another exceptional Super Rugby campaign and also backed that up for Tonga. It became rather comical how often commentators mentioned where Sona Taumalolo was standing in the backline so prolific he was in 2012. Nine tries in Super Rugby meant he saw off the likes of Cian Healy and Rodrigo Roncero.

@Rolf, Since PR staff aren't answering, let me try an estimate: I think roughly 140 people responded. I calculated this by googling my submission (or I could have used Trinat's "Cooper, Cooper, Cooper....joke" to get to the original page which doesn't appear easy to get any other way. i then counted the number of pages which came to 7, noted that most submissions were roughly the same size....i.e. 3 lines...which gave roughly 20 per page......so roughly 140 responded....or probably a bit less since 2 people didn't follow the format suggested....both Ozzies....and one dipshite asked a question....a saffa, if i recall.

Dear PR, please unveil how many voters participated, so we get an idea of how big a margin of 10 votes is relatively.

interetsing how very close our expert vote is to the PR editors. And also nice to see, that SBW is cherished for waht he contributes on the pitch and not judged by his other, err..., behaviour.

@Rosbif, As usual, you are exactly right....Have a great Christmas in the sun.

@JayStarr, Apologies! Have a Happy Christmas and a slightly less opinionated New Year....joke...do whatever you like in the new year....I hope your exams went well. Peace.

@ newj4all: And your opinions? They are worthless to me... So that settles it.

now now @new_j4a. easy there on JayStarr. 'tis the season of goodwill, remember.....

@JayStarr the idea that you are better qualified, better informed, and better positioned to judge the Dagg vs Taylor question than the AB selectors and at least 68% of readers here (how many votes did Taylor get?) is hilarious. You really must try to improve your self confidence and fight against these feelings that your opinions are worthless?

JayStarr says...

There are a few names here which I don't agree with... Dan Carter being one of them. It was clear from some of the people who voted that they just included him because they thought he must have been the best player because he was awarded the IRB player of the year award...

But he wasn't! He was definitely not the best fly-half in Super Rugby (Aaron Cruden was), so people's votes can only be based on international form. But even there I believe Freddie Michalak was more valuable to the French team than Carter was for the All Blacks - he single-handedly won them a number of games, as he also did for the Sharks in Super Rugby when he almost single-handedly got them into the finals. However, that is just my opinion - it is debatable...

What is not debatable for me is full-back. I think it is a joke that Israel Dagg was voted best full-back of the year. He was not himself in Super Rugby - he had a distinctly average season for the Crusaders. It was only with the All Blacks that he stepped up a bit... But not he, or any other fullback, came close to what Andre Taylor did for the Hurricanes. In every one of his 15 or so games Taylor was untouchable - he was involved in nearly every attacking move of the Hurricanes and ended up being the top try scorer of the tournament... The only reason why he missed out on All Black selection is because Dagg is the incumbant and they had enough back-up cover at fullback from versatile players.

I can't believe that so few people voted for Andre Taylor. For me that shows how little rugby they actually watched this year, because nothing Israel Dagg did this year touched the rugby Andre Taylor played from February to August.

Dan Cole is the only obvious name that doesn't belong there.

@PR, not sure if you are legally permitted to disclose (or if it's an admin nightmare for some-one in the back-office to do), but I would be interested to know the breakdown of your readership by country.

Occasionally, there are polls like this Readers Team, or the question "who do you think will win the world cup in 2015" that throw out some interesting results. We all know NZ are the top nation. But I suspect Kiwis also dominate your readership stats, followed by other SH then English perhaps. Just guessing. (But I'd put my mortgage on French and Argentine being a long way down the list)

Anyway, all the more kudos for Lobbe!! But Roncero, Camacho, Fofana, and Picamoles probably all missed out because of the unrepresentative sample of readers you have methinks.

England v New Zealand : New Zealand players in match 23 born outside NZ =0. England players born outside Eng = 5. Thats not including Dylan Hartley, Thomas Waldrum, Mouritz Botha and Delon Armitage who were involved earlier in the year.

APV1 says...

Can't argue with that selection. I'd like to, especially as they're all so mediocre, apart from the Tighthead, but I shan't.

@cuw3100, Sharpe wasn't in my pick for exactly the reasons you state (Genia was my token Oz), but I am very happy to see him there......just because it will piss @georgesmith off no end.....(plus he is a great, great servant of the game, and why not? A little nostalgia is a good thing at this time of year)

@nzmaoriboy:

2012 Replacements are still to be defined... My guess, based upon PR comments:

16 Bismarck Du Plessis 17 Owen Franks 18 Sam WhiteLock 19 Louis Picamoles 20 Aaron Smith 21 Jonathan Sexton 22 Wesley Fofana 23 Cian Healy

More balanced between NH & SH than 1st choice XV.

rugbyforever.... Straight from Wikipedia... Kahn Fotualiżi (born 22 May 1982) is a New Zealand-born Samoan rugby union player. Feel like an idiot?

cuw3100 says...

hmmm Sharpe in the 2012 team is more sentimental than performance based.

I mean he managed to lose couple of matches by himself!!! Other than EE most 2nd rowers were good but not great, like W'lock, Romano, the Argentine locks, the french locks....

ferdie says...

isograord - unsure re Kahn Fotuali'i think he made the best decision by choosing Samoa, he is 31 next May, while he may have a run for Samoa at 2015 RWC think he'd be well out of the AB picture with Smith, Perenara etc the new/young ones. If he'd been selected for ABs would have been as their #3 halfback at RWC 2011, aged 29. By opting for Samoa allowed him to play overseas and still get international games, more money in what are the last few years of his career.

Wow, very New Zealand focused and very SH focused, which is very fair considering how results have gone this year. At least the PR fans are recognising Dan Cole for the great player he is and let's hope the lions selectors are as intelligent.

@ABlack

Very true.

@nzmaoriboy

Very interesting. Implies Carter and Smith have been the most consistently good player for the last three years. Which for me is true, though I still picked Tuilagi at 13. ;)
