Chargey Hodgson: Does it again for England

It was a case of close but no cigar for Italy as England claimed another unconvincing 19-15 Six Nations victory in Rome on Saturday.
Italy outscored their hosts two tries to one, however it was once again the boot of Owen Farrell that saved the day for England as the young centre contributed 14 points in horrendous conditions.
The Azzurri will be kicking themselves after leading 12-6 at half-time thanks to two quickfire tries before the break, but weren't able to keep up the pressure in the second half as England were forced to dig deep against their stubborn hosts to claim back-to-back away wins.
After a scrappy opening littered with poor kicking out of hand, England were unfortunate not to bag the game's opening try on the half-hour when David Strettle's kick-through was eventually touched down by Phil Dowson.
Referee Jerome Garces had already blown for obstruction on Strettle - and Farrell converted the resulting penalty before adding another soon afterwards.
But two minutes before the break, a pair of grubber kicks caused confusion and wing Giovanbattista Venditti was on-hand to punish Ben Foden's fumble by falling over the line in the corner.
England seemed set to enter the dressing room one point to the good but from the restart, Foden's attempted off-load was intercepted for centre Tommaso Benvenuti to race under the posts from the halfway line and ignite the stadium.
Italy pivot Kris Burton capitalised with a penalty that made it 15-6 early in the second period, but England immediately clawed their way back into it when opposite number Charlie Hodgson charged down Andrea Masi's attempted clearance for a try out of nowhere.
It was the England fly-half's second charge-down try in as many games - and once again proved to be the turning point in the match.
The introductions of Lee Dickson and Ben Morgan cemented the visitors' momentum - providing the opportunity for the flawless Farrell to drive over a 54th minute penalty and secure the narrowest of leads.
With Martin Castrogiovanni injured in the first period, England had more than held their own up front and Farrell stretched the advantage to 19-15 in the 65th minute from a penalty awarded at a scrum.
Tobias Botes replaced Burton for the final half-hour and was handed two shots at goal that would have won the game - but the South African-born scrum-half was woefully off-target with both as England crept home.
Man of the match: A committed display by a number of Italians ultimately went unrewarded, with skipper Sergio Parisse once again leading from the front. However, a nerveless and flawless display of kicking from Owen Farrell amid freezing conditions in Rome helped the visitors claim their come-from-behind win.
Moment of the match: The dramatic double strike from Giovanbattista Venditti and Tommaso Benvenuti had given the Azzurri a clear lead at the half-time interval before England managed to turn the tables through that second-half try from Charlie Hodgson that sparked England into life.
Villain of the match: The weather! In freezing conditions, scores were always going to be hard to come by and it was no surprise that both sides struggled to create much.

Another win but not a great performance. Its easy to criticise England but in reality there'll probably be quite a few changes when everyone is available. If you add Lawes for Botha, Morgan for Dowson, Dickson for Youngs, Flood for Hodgson, Tuilagi for Barritt, and possibly Wood for either croft or Robshaw all of a sudden the side looks very different and actually fills me with quite a bit of confidence. Im not sure what we should do with Farrell because for me he doesn't provide enough with ball in hand, but then again he hasn't really done anything wrong and his goal kicking is first class. Id like to see him at 10 but im sure we'll go for Flood. Id also like to see JTH get more than just the last few minutes so we can actually see whay he's about.

The game was a joke. A decent college 1st XV would have been better on the TV.
Who is in need of confidence here. The Team, the Coaching Staff or the RFU. Two of the easiest out the way....Wales, Ireland and France... to come?

I understand the call for Dickson to start the next game. He was excellent for his first 10 minutes after coming on. He did get caught a couple of times around the fringes though. I thought dowson was the pick of englands forwards before coming off. I wouldn't be fooled by a couple of carries from Morgan to think his impact was as dramatic as is being made out. Italy were tiring and the game opened up by the time he came on. I'd stick with dowson for now

Italy threw away a win with stupid decision-making, poor skills & poor composure (again).
When will they learn ?
Can't fault their commitment though.

An unconvincing win. One clear fix - Dickson to start ahead of Youngs.
Lineout was poor until they stopped throwing to the locks and started throwing to Croft.
England now have a problem - Owen Farrell.
He defends fairly well, he Kicks extremely well. He attacks like a stick in mud.
England now need to change their 10, 12, 13 and drop at least 2 of the Sarries to make way for Tuilangi and Flood to give them much needed attacking edge. Otherwise why bother with an attacking back 3???
Then there is the 6,7,8 mess...

Well quite frankly I hope youngs is dropped for that appalling first half display, Dickson was brilliant and just what we need at scrumhalf (he brought the whole team to life) Dowson isn't filling that 8 role all that well at the minute so I think he should drop to the bench as he can cover all 3 backrow positions fairly well and morgan should be swapped for narraway to come in as starting 8. Then Wood in for croft, replace hodgson with flood/farrel at 10, 12 farrel or barritt and 13 tuilagi then keep the back three the same for some gelling time and hopefully england will pick up their game again (also bring lawes in for palmer who is too old) and our attacking complaints will be set aside, as for the english front 5? Brilliant against a far more experienced front 5 again, if we match up to the French and SA front 5 like that then I'd be tempted to say we have the best front 5 in the world...

You mean unlike the "lucky" tries gifted to Italy?
This website is totally anti-English, not sure what the sponsors think about that?

Hey guys, don't blame Italy, limited, but energetic.
The villain is garces.
has anyone seen such an incompetant ref at the scrum?
Allowed play to continue when scrums had gone down, Stevens turned in, yet got the PK.
His legs were in the air, his opposite number still on his feet, but his head down because of Stevens.
If England, RWC winnersin 2003 think they are progressing, think again!
Shoddy.
Well done Italy, England two out of two, don't let it go to your heads!
:-)

@papachinzo - How is it 'flukey' when the first Italian try came from a completely random bounce of the ball and the second was an interception? I'll concede that England's try wasn't exactly created by the men in white, but we should have been a try to the good already if it wasn't for Garces shooting his bolt too soon; he has clearly never heard of the term 'advantage'.
I thought both teams played pretty well, given the conditions; there is still too much imprecision in the handling from England but they're trying different tactics and probing, which is a good sign - Rome wasn't built in a day. Youngs though is quite clearly the weak link there and Dowson is the weediest eight in the world - I'd like to see both Morgan and Dickson start the next game, and possibly Parling instead of Palmer, who isn't at his best either. I'm curious what will happen when Flood and Tuilagi are available; will Barritt or Farrell be dropped to the bench?

Charlie Hodgson deserves to be carried around on the other English "players" shoulders for the rest of the 6N. He has actually won two games for them. Yes, Farrell kicks very nicely but 14pts would still have lost it for 'em - Charlie's try is wot won it, same as against us last week!

Italy deserved to lose: they did too many stupid mistakes.
Masi had to be replaced immediately after that ridicolous slow motion kick. His belated Christmas gift gave away the game and frustrated the hopes of the 72000 present at the Olimpico.
At the end England looked more surprised than happy.

Well another win for England and it was hared fought and again they showed sprit and and grit and dug themselves out of a big hole,as Italy again played well .Think its ovious now that Dickson and Morgon need to start against Wales as they did bring the pace and dynamiism that was missing 1st half .Still alot of work to be done for England but it is an encouraging start to the new era .Also a better match to watch considering the conditions so well done both teams in that regardwho would have thought SNOW in ROME and freezing temps again

Very lucky to win that one, Fluky even. If Italy had either 1.Retained the ball instead of kicking it every chance they got. Or 2.Made two of their four missed kicks, England would have lost. Fact.
From what I've seen so far, I don't see them beating Ireland, Wales or France...
