Six Nations Twickenham England v Italy huddle

Should be fiery: Italy v England

Despite them being comfortably beaten by France in Paris, Italy will no doubt enter Saturday's meeting with the English full of confidence at Stadio Olimpico.

As is the way of the Azzurri, they had managed to hold a bigger-named rival to a slender margin for a large period - 15-9 after 50 minutes to be exact.

But then the opposition clicked into top gear and outclassed Italy to eventually cruise. Now the question is, do England have the same class?

"We analysed the Rugby World Cup matches and up to the 60th minutes it was always 9-6, 6-6, and it was really in the final 20 minutes that you saw the difference so we had to be patient," said new France head coach Philippe Saint-Andre following their tough win at Stade de France last weekend.

"We saw in their game a tactic to go for territory but today they were much more ambitious in their game-plan and keeping the ball.

"Italy employed a strategy that saw them keep the ball. They didn't give it up easily."

Expect exactly the same grit and determination in Rome this Saturday as Jacques Brunel will be hoping his side replicate the performance that defeated France in this tournament last season. He makes two changes to his side as Aironi lock Marco Bortolami will earn his 90th cap as he replaces Treviso's Cornelius Van Zyl. That decision has left many bemused as nothing has been mentioned on whether Van Zyl suffered an injury in his strong showing.

In the backline, Clermont centre Gonzalo Canale will start in place of Alberto Sgarbi, who has been omitted from the squad. He'll give the Azzurri plenty of grunt alongside Tommaso Benvenuti, with both needing to win personal battles against Owen Farrell and Brad Barritt.

"I believe we can do it and all the team really believes we can do it," revealed Canale, despite the English having won all seventeen internationals against Italy to date.

Confidence indeed as bookmakers have Italy at 3/1 and the visitors starting at 1/4, which does seem a touch off the mark for a game that is expected to be close. England did not create much against Scotland and should that trend continue, there may be something of a stalemate. However, the Italians are not known for their attacking prowess and as England showed in Edinburgh, their defence looks to be on the money. Is it a recipe for dullness?

England might not care about flair though and - by their own count - they made more tackles than ever before in a Test match and conceded a mere nine penalties at Murrayfield. The old adage of winning because of defence could well be the formula England adopt under Stuart Lancaster. Comparing to last year against Italy, Chris Ashton scored four as England won 59-13 - but also they conceded 18 penalties, so there is expected to be a shift in thinking.

"It's a mindset in the team now, with people realising the impact it can have on a game if we keep giving away penalties. It is massive for us," said Ashton, who starts in an unchanged starting line-up and bench as Lancaster gives a second chance to the likes of Phil Dowson.

"At the World Cup it cost us a lot and in the end it is what got us knocked out, basically. It is something we have focused on a lot.

"Sometimes when you are involved with the team, you can't see that [behaviour off the pitch could influence performance on it].

"Sometimes it takes someone like Stu to come in from the outside and realise that."

Lessons seem to be being learnt by England but will they pass their Italian test?

Ones to watch:

For Italy: Aironi lock Marco Bortolami will earn his 90th cap as he replaces Treviso's Cornelius Van Zyl in the second-row, who put in a superb performance last weekend. Bortolami has got to follow suit this week and not let the side down as it doesn't take a rocket scientist to fathom that the hosts will be looking to get amongst England from the outset. Of course, it would also be worthwhile keeping an eye on that man Sergio Parisse.

For England: Keeping the scoreboard ticking over is key in Rome and that is why Owen Farrell and Chris Robshaw need to be on the same page when offences present themselves. Last week's joint top-tackler Brad Barritt is expected to produce another steely performance while we're expecting a bit more from number eight Phil Dowson this week and would not be surprised if he popped up wide out for an English score.

Head-to-head: We are most looking forward to seeing how young pretender Alex Corbisiero fronts up against the gritty Martin Castrogiovanni. There is little doubt that the Leicester tighthead will be going after his Aviva Premiership rival on Saturday and it will comfort Stuart Lancaster knowing that Matt Stevens is an option should things get a touch uncomfortable. Elsewhere, the Gonzalo Canale against Owen Farrell battle sees two different styles collide.

Owens just set the margin between the two teams, France were going to win anyway.

He had a good game up to 60 minute, then he let it slip a bit (he may have thought the game was over).

Stating that Castro bores in is like stating that McCaw is always in offside. I think the second sentence is more true than the first.

Still feeling the heat from S.Siro, uh?

@ darthbok, thats hilarious! He does get a lot more credit than he's really due doesn't he, he has average games like everyone else. Parisse is clearly a pretty awesome player and an awesome bloke by the sounds of things but every touch is greeted with ridiculous hyperbole. I don't know how he'd react to even just faint praise now. Probably mope back to his big house in the leafy Parisian suburbs to have a cuddle with Miss Europe and think about where everything has gone wrong

@kent - going backwards like beating France, World Cup Runners Up, last year? Going backwards like only losing 17-12 last time they played a full strength England side at home?

So much for "results shouldn't matter to a rebuilding team" if losing to a strong Italian side in Rome is a disaster!

Sometimes losing is a better learning experience than winning and this 6 nations is supposed to be about learning, not seeing if we can finish 3rd or 4th.

Disagree about the referee (Owens) influencing the game last week.

I am one of his biggest critics, and I thought he had a good game.

Italy in Rome will be different, as many teams have found out.

Depends on how the new venue suits Italy, could just sneak it.

What's up Bok?

fed up of the poster boy?

Why don't you give us your true feelings?

:-)

Juts Ignore it, I do.

Bit like the BBC when the Armitage boys or the blunderwood twins were playing.

Or was that the Olsen twins???

I agree with PR: the main battle will be in the midfield, expecially the Farrell vs Canale fight. Two very different styles. Canale will try the blitz defense to create disruption between Hodgson and Farrell axis.

If England win this game, they will put a herculean performance. It want be easy.

My hearts command this time and I go for Italy by 6!!!

If anyone goes on about the genius of sergio Priapic I will break the tellie -never heard anyone say anything bad about him. I just want him to do a spear tackle or gouge someone -- even then the commentators will accuse the other player of faking it -- I bet he even farts lynx deodorant ---

@rugby_rockstar I was under the impression corbs was actually pretty good come scrum time (certainly a better loosehead than stevens) and he, Hartley and Cole took on Scotlands front row fantastically (considering the quality of scotlands front row they should have crushed england at the scrum).

England really do need to step up their game from last week. Italy will be very stiff opposition.

What I really want to see is an England team not scared of losing, but instead being positive and trying to play an expansive game. And of course get the basics right. Because without that it'll be very difficult indeed.

Its going to be a hard fought close match i feel..Italy played well last weekend but still lacked that pubch .England didnt show much at Murryfield in attack and will have to show something this weekend i feel .England can and i suspect will nick it by 3 but boy is it going to be a nail bitter just like the Scotland game

@Ramm 83,..... which England do you mean,... surly not the team that played last week????

I really think you ned to watch those games again,... Italy are not going to be easy for anyone to beat this year,.. France didn't have a Sunday stroll last week by any stretch,..

It's just when you start thinking the win is easy, that you lose, and England need to up their game from last week considerably to beat this Italian side,..

This is going to be a very tight game - If the Sarries backs can unleash the class behind them England could run away with it but I doubt they will be able to do it with the pack struggling in the trenches.

IMO it will come down to who has the best day with the boot from the tee.

As an England fan, I actually think Italy have a more than decent shot at winning this. Even thinking about backing them to win the match, not just beat the handicap.

I agree with the comments that the referreeing cost Italy quite badly agaisnt the French, who were allowed lazy runners all day. Don't think it would have affected the eventual outcome, but England won't be the threat that France were, plus this is in Rome where it is always difficult.

I also don't think it would be a huge blow for the new England side to lose to Italy - might do more good than stuttering to another victory and thinking they're better than they are.

Personally, I don't care about the results at this stage, or even the performance particularly. It's about giving the players some experience at international level and time to gel as a squad.

It will be a very different prospect to Scotland and would be quite nice to see Italy knock over another "top" side (using the phrase very loosely!).

France vs Italy was a closer match that the score suggested. The turning point of the match was that 3rd try, which was a bit lucky, to say the least.

Owens then managed to keep Italy's head well under water with some dubious, lazy calls. An example, France managed a turnover from McLean in front of their post, which was a penalty and a yellow. Not suggesting that Italy would have won this, just that they give French a run for their money,

For the first time for 6N's matches in Rome, it is going to be wet rugby. It is even expected snow. This should put the focus on the forward battle even more.

Unless there will be some early breaks from the English backline, it is going to be close.

I got a very nice quote for +8,5 handicap for Italy at 1,85. I think that this is going to happen.

England to prevail with some late streetwise play, just.

@ rugby_rockstar - I agree that the Italian front row have the experience over ours, but I still think it'll be a good scrap. Let's face it, Cole and Castro will want to prove who the best tighthead at Tigers is...

But in the second row, I think we're about honours-even. Palmer and Botha have the combination of experience, bulk and set-piece prowess to take on the Italians. And Croft in the back-row gives us some fantastic line-out options (Dowson and Robshaw are no slouches either).

I think the experience of their back-row does trump ours, but again it'll be an interesting battle. I think they'll win the breakdown, but we'll be better around the park.

And I think we've got the edge of them in the back three if (and it's a big IF) Hodgson, Farrell and Barritt can get it out there.

Never have I felt and England : Italy match has been so close and I can't wait!

Italy's problem against France was that, for all their huff and puff, their new offloading game was so telegraphed that the defence just sat there and waited.

France didn't get many scoring chances in the first half, but that says more about the Italian control of possession and territory than it does about their defensive abilities. France scored from each of their opportunities.

An English supporter but really can't call this one.
