Hard to hold: Nicolas Sanchez

Pumas fly-half Nicolas Sanchez admitted his team were bitterly disappointed after their narrow loss to South Africa on Saturday in a game where they they could have, at least, snatched a drawn.

The Pumas pivot was one of the outstanding performers in a bruising game marred by torrential rain and hail.

Argentina have lost 12 of their 13 previously Rugby Championship matches and they fell short of snatching s econd draw against the Springboks after they squandered three late chances to snatch a try.

"We have a feeling we are gaining more and more respect with each passing game because today we put South Africa under a lot of pressure and could have tied the game in the last minute," said Sanchez after the Test at Loftus Versfeld.

"We are really disappointed because I think we were really close to a result and let it escape.

Sanchez paid tribute to his team's pack who matched South Africa in the tight exchanges and ruled the scrums.

"The forwards had a great game with both the line-outs and the scrums working well," he said.

"But we are going to have to double that effort because we know South Africa will redouble their effort in Salta," he added refering to next Saturday's return game in the northern Argentine city.

"We are pleased with the performance but there are things to correct," new Argentina coach Daniel Hourcade told reporters.

"I am calm, but not happy - because we wanted to win the game and came close to a draw.

"We trained the entire week in sun and [the] rain [on Saturday] greatly complicated matters.

"However, we have to work even harder this week, as next Saturday's game will be more difficult."
