All Blacks grind past Pumas

New Zealand v Argentina - Piri Weepu

Nowhere to go: Piri Weepu

New Zealand were made to work very hard but got the job done by beating Argentina 33-10 on Sunday to advance to the Rugby World Cup semi-finals.

The All Blacks were far from their best but teams seldom are in knockout rugby. What may be a concern to them though was the loss of Colin Slade to injury. Dan Carter's fly-half replacement left the field during the first stanza with a leg injury, being replaced by third-choice Aaron Cruden.

It was a scrum-half who stole the headlines though at Eden Park as Piri Weepu kicked 21 points, missing just one attempt on the night.

Seen as the dead-cert of the quarter-finals, it was always going to be critical for the Pumas to repel any swift score from the All Blacks. Which was exactly what they did whilst forcing some early mishaps from a nervous playmaker Slade. Quickly, most of the crowd noise was Argentina's.

But on twelve minutes the early Pumas stampede was finally weathered and New Zealand posted their first calming points via the boot of Weepu. It arrived following a line-out indiscretion which allowed the nine, arguably chosen to take the kicking load off Slade, to slot from 40 metres.

In 1987, these two battled to a 46-15 scoreline in favour of the All Blacks. However, any sort of a repeat was always going to be unlikely with times markedly different in 2011. So much so that, despite an almost try from number eight Kieran Read in the left corner, Argentina were more than standing steady going into the second quarter. Only a couple of set-piece offences proved their downfall as again Weepu was successful, this time on 25 minutes.

Argentina had never been trailing by more than six points in the 2011 tournament and they soon demonstrated why with a superb break off the base of their scrum seeing number eight Leonardo Senatore pierce the All Black defence before recycled ball led to Julio Farias Cabello crashing over due to a lapse in the home guard system. Felipe Contepomi added the extra two points for a 6-7 advantage which coincided with Slade departing the action.

New Zealand needed to, and ultimately did, recompose as they captured some of that early territory they had enjoyed previously. Weepu again was on the mark from the kicking tee as the Pumas' lead was short-lived. The visitors had however silenced Eden Park and given themselves belief of the impossible. They would have to come back from 12-7 down though in the second-half following another penalty being awarded. Weepu was four from four.

Still though the Pumas would not roll over as they did not hang around with their task at hand. Marcelo Bosch it was who landed a long-range penalty that brought them back to within two points. New Zealand, who were without Test centurion Mils Muliaina for the second-half, again hit back soon after though in what was turning into a ding-dong battle. Very few had expected such a close-fought encounter to decide who would play Australia.

Nevertheless, the home side were beginning to take a grip on the game towards the hour mark and almost crossed the whitewash when Richie McCaw stretched for the post protector. Television match official Shaun Veldsman though otherwise however, in a passage that coincided with Nicolas Vergallo being shown a yellow card. Things were starting to look bleak for the Pumas, who were camped on their own line for long periods as New Zealand went for the kill. Consolation for the All Blacks was another advantage having been played during those aforementioned phases, which opened up a key two-score lead.

And that was the cushion the All Blacks needed as they continued to enjoy their territorial and phase dominance that saw Kieran Read left unattended to wide on the left wing. New Zealand were 23-10 to the good as the game approached its final ten minutes and Argentina's challenged neared its end. Weepu added another three to his personal tally in the closing stages before Thorn iced the nervous yet measured display. Australia next.

Man of the match: A near faultless kicking display from Piri Weepu sees him take the award. He marshalled well from the base and seems to have secured the nine jersey.

Moment of the match: It was tit for tat for long periods at Eden Park before Kieran Read put the game to bed with a try wide out. Argentina had a mountain to climb after that score.

Villain of the match: All clean and fair at Eden Park.

Man, I thought this was i good game of rugby. Argentina were very, very tough and were matching, and in some periods of the first half, dominating the ABs at the breakdown. No doubt, a victory over the ABs is on the cards after a season or 2 of 4nations rugby.

I'm glad the ABs got such a tough test from the Argentines. Just what they needed in preparation for this weeks match against the Wallabies.

I know we have 4 games to go, but I think The Puma's try will be right-up there as one of the best, CLASS.

They will be a worthy addition to the tri-nations, but there players will be shattered because for there season will be nearly 12 months,

@Thatllbme

You are a man that don't have argument and just like disqualify. I never say that other people are silly.

McCaw has other outstanding features, but when playing in the ruck in a high percentage commits an offense and if that's not dirty, do not understand the concept of fair play with you.

He was an average performance by the ABs. They would have been there to take for SA. Anyway, good luck for the next game, I would not mind if New Zealand lift the cup. They have almost always showed some good and entertaining rugby.

@7Ton: thanks my friend. Will review today the game and will give u the period (is anyhow on the first half, that I remember, and NZ was awarded a pen that they kick between posts...

As i said, I admire Mc Caw, is a great player and really love him. And again, I think that referee was bad enough for both teams here. Probelms is, when referee is that bad, the weakest team pays the highest price, as it was for Argentina.

I have the impression that match could have ended much closer altough always on the black tide side. Just leaves u frustated to see so many comments of people saying the Pumas should have has 5-6 people sin binned. If that's the level, than to be fair also the AB should have had the same amount.

Was a tense match, one I enjoyed watching. One I screamed at the referee trough my TV pleanty of times, but again I think that Pumas did all they could and gave the ABs probably what will be their most complicate match in the tournament. I don't think neither Australia can create real problems (they don't have the scrum) nor France (too slow but not able to slow the game as the pumas) or Wales (the team I like more in this RWC, btu lack of experience and they will pay it in the final - yes, I think they will play agains the ABs).

Talk to u soon

As I said McCaw is no angel and I have seen him enter the ruck from offside like plenty of other players mainly loose forwards.

My post was in regards to a lack of understanding of the rules by many people who constantly shout of about a player being offside when in fact he is not and does not just only apply to this game of which it would probably be fair to say both teams got away with a few things. I don't think Nigel Owens was very good for either team.

I don't have a problem with Argentina slowing the game down as it was the best way the could play the All Blacks

In regards to a player being in front of the kicker as I understand he has to move back from the vicinity of the ball. If you can give us a time period in the match I will have a look at it in the replay when I have time this evening

@7ton: just tell, when he enters from the side without tackling anyone, is ti because he did so many tackles before? kind of bonus?

c'mon, he should have had to be penalized, he did not. Once he even came offside and the ref told the pumas he is not to be penalized because he did not interfeer! He stop the action, slowed the process and block a possible start from blind side but he did not interfeer! and he penalized argentina for a player being in front of the kicker, a flanker that wasn't even running!

To those yet again going on about McCaw please understand this.

As he is a no. 7 he makes a huge ammount of tackles and as the tackler so long as he releases the tackled player and gets to his feet he can contest for the ball from any direction before a ruck is formed. McCaw is very quick and good at this and while I wouldn't call him a perfect angel please do not confuse this with entering the ruck from an offside position.

Ok, read a lot and decided to comment. AB's are a far better team than Argentina and will have won any how. I am happy with how the Pumas played and did exactly what I tought the whole week: they would last for an hour. This they did. I like a lot their attitude anyhow: they always played as equal and always for the win: the first NZ try came thansk of a missed interception by a Puma, that could hvae took the game to 18-17, remember that.

Said so, Argentina played to slow the ball: what a surprised! Is how they played the whole tournament and how they should and could play. Is their game: ABs could not cope with it? Their problem. Why Pumas should paly to help them?

As for all kiwis: be fair and if you want we can review the match at my place. Your team was holding the ball at every ruck, Mc Caw (that I consider a hell of a player, really one of the greatest) has been coming in from the side on almost every ruck, plenty of offsides from ABs, high tackle on Ledesma not even seen...

We can say that ref was bad fro both, you cannot absolutely say that referee was helping the Pumas. Not at all

I think that we watched different match, The AB take a more time with the ball in the ruck, in Germany all people watched the same

Firts, if you are impartial could to have watched the infractions the McCaw, McCaw play to make infractions in the ruck, that is shameful.

Second, my firts languaje is Germany, and I'm sorry if you can't understand

Good tough game, kept getting the feeling that the AB's were going to break out anytime, but the Puma's played and tackled like men possessed.Piri Weepu,,what a game,i have no doubt the this man could play 9 or 10 equally well, good on Kieran Read, one of my favourites, top game again and hope he is well over his injury,Jerome,a huge game, these two could lead from the front and present huge problems for the Wallabies next week, and dear old Brad, how me and my mates with lots of beers around us,cheered and laughed and roared as he sprinted down the sideline with twinkle toes to score a magnificent try, well done.

@shaneboks 2011

hahaha nice post!

McCaw a dirty player? McCaw may push the limits at the ruck but THERE IS NO WAY HE IS DIRTY. Dirty is headbutting a player from behind, kneeing a player in the head when he cant defend himself, biting a players ear, a cheap elbow to head when once again the player is unable to defend himself and eye gouging.

Look up the word dirty in a dictionary (ask your mum what a dictionary is) and you find "Please refer to Bakkies Botha, Schalk Burger & Afraid Cooper"

thanks for the laugh tho

@BradS. Sorry mate did get the "sarcasm" bit, just being cheeky. Agree with you, the only use for SBW is for centre cover on the bench, but I guess that is too narrow for the 3 wise men (you must cover 1 to 15 to make it there), so checking him for wing cover as well I guess. Enjoy the rest of the cup.

@ shsvs... yes it was & yes he did, click on "Injury mard Muliaina's big day" & there's even a photo of him wearing it as he's being applauded off the field after the presentation.

Looks like some of my fellow AB followers need to take their happy pills - a win by 23 in an RWC QF isn't too shabby, Argentina aren't the easy-beats they once were, plus this was the first time in the tournament that anyone has been able to put the ABs under any real pressure, this is what we needed going into SF.

No reason why ABs can't sneak past Oz even if only by a point or 3 in injury time!

Nigel Owens as a referee really sucks. IRB have to choose better referees for a world cup next time. Please Nigel Owens don't choose side in games . Rugby is about honor and you show me yesterday that you have no honor. What a shame! Do a favor for all the people we love rugby !...............just get retirement

@shaneboks 2011

What??? You may have a valid point to make , but your post is totally unintelligible. I did detect some vitriol directed toward Ritchie McCaw. You have obviously watched a hell of a lot of rugby if you feel qualified to crown, said Mr McCaw the dirtiest player in the world, I must have missed that poll!

You're probably a bit young to remember, so go and google Corne Krige or look up You-Tube for England v South Africa November 2002 at Twickenham, a real lesson in dirty play.

I'll not condemn your grammar as `English' may not be your first language, but if not please listen better in class or have an adult post for you.

How assured did Cruden look coming on for Slade. Interesting as it was the other way round last year in Australia.

yes, however he was luckly things were going right for him and not the other way round and didn't pick up an injury either!!!

Mark Hamnett must being feeling a bit dumb seeing how well his discarded ABs are doing under another coach, it was nearly a hurricanes back line but for SBW and Mils..

Yes, and some of them arn't dumb enough to do half the rubbish they did at the canes otherrwise they wouldn't be playing for the abs ...what a stupid statement to make!

I though owens's ref'ing was poor most of the game and allowed the pumas to handle the ball in the ruck on the floor all night, in fact they did it right in front of him and he didn't do anything?? Going into a ruck and not using a shoulder??? Tackling in the air in a lineout wrong for one team and not for the other?? I though a certain mr lawrence in the othewr game was average as well, pity because the best ref this tournament has been a bok ref named joubert.

No help for the AB's from the ref in this game, that's not for debate! Poor performance from my fellow welshman. Clearly the Puma's should have had about 4-5 yellow cards in that game (or not if you like slow play and cheating).
