Derby: Dan Evans

Dragons full-back Dan Evans believes the region can start their LV= Cup campaign with a bang against his former side on Friday.

The Dragons kick off with a derby against the Scarlets at Parc y Scarlets, before the visit to Rodney Parade of Premiership side London Wasps.

After a poor start to the competition last year, which all but ruled them out of the latter stages by Christmas, ex-Scarlet evans knows the importance of getting early results.

"If you win the first game then you go in the right direction," Evans told the South Wales Argus.

"Hopefully we build in the next two weeks and produce two big performances.

"The start is important, especially with us being away from home on Friday, and we want to be in with a chance of qualifying next year.

"Our away record hasn't been good this season (losing all four games to Edinburgh, Munster, Bath and the Ospreys) so this weekend is a chance to change that."

The 24-year-old believes the tournament could provide an opportunity for fringe players to force their way into the first-team reckoning.

"It's a fresh tournament and it gives the rest of the squad a chance to prove what they are capable of," added Evans.

"It will be interesting to see how the younger players come through because there is a lot of talent at all the regions and everyone wants to stake a claim.

"It's the same with the Scarlets, who have had a tough couple of weeks and have a lot of boys with Wales. They will make changes but they will still want to win, especially with it being a derby."
